An idiot at work decided to put her laptop in her garment bag and had it checked in as luggage on a flight. Needless to say the laptop came back in pieces, screen cracked, dvd-rom drive with a huge gash from a punture underneath, her shampoo spilled all inside the laptop. They must have slammed this bag all over the place. Anyway, the HD survived so I got her data off and I snatched up the 512 ddr sodimm and it works fine. I took out the pentium 4 M 1.8ghz chip which seems ok. I know it fits in a standard 478 slot (I put it in a spare mobo at work). My question is this, if I hooked it up would this chip work on a standard mobo or would it fry due to voltage differences or such? Thanks.

What you actually have is the Pentium-4M.

They do operate at lower voltages, but since they are Northwood based, giving them the standard 1.5V doesnt hurt (but try not to exceed 1.7V). They default to a 12X multiplier and cannot be changed. If you get a good stepping (C1/D1), they can reach 3Ghz with relative ease. B0 steppings max at around 2.4Ghz. Its like a Pentium-4 2.4C chip, except without HT. But anyways, if you're going to put it in a desktop board, I recommend an enthusiast board (Asus/Abit) instead of an OEM board (Intel/Gateway/Dell).

The motherboard should auto detect the voltage. A lot of people on here bought Pentium-Ms to put in their desktop computer just fine. Of course it probably won't have SpeedStep but on a desktop you don't need that.

i'm running a 1.8ghz P4m in a desktop motherboard right now
they work perfectly, but obviousely the memory is different
you can also buy a connector to use the laptop hard drive in a desktop system

i did this after my laptop power cord, power connector, cdrw/dvd combo drive, keyboard all broke
i got sick of dealing with a laptop that always broke and wasn't going to pay 90 bucks for a power cord
so needless to say the other parts will prob hit ebay

In the message body I state P4 M, but for the anal retentive I changed it. Excuse my rudeness, but I hate non-related posts especially if it is useless. Others caught the P4 M in the message body. Thanks for the vent.
