Stupid question about optical cables

So I am currently packing to move, and I don't have all the little plastic/rubber covers that my digital optical audio cables came in. Should I borrow some, or am I being paranoid? Are they highly recommended to prevent the tips from getting damaged? I probably don't need them, cause otherwise they'd be harder to lose, but just wondering.... thanks!

If you're worried about it, you could make covers of some kind yourself. I don't bother when I move, I just coil them up with the other ~2 million cables I take with me whenever I move.

I think one of extremely cheap optical cables has made it through 5 moves with no issues
