Stupid question about hockey gloves

Are the padded gloves that players wear imbedded with metal to protect their fingers? People have told me both ways. I've always believed this is true because that would justify the need to remove gloves in a fight between players. If I remember correctly you get minor ramifications for fighting if you take off your gloves first, but if they're kept on you get a VERY steep penalty.
