bigbadsid was d/ling (and still is) my schindler's list album. I canceled it b/c I'm only a crappy 56k and there are a lot of others who have broadband. he then d/ls another song, I canceled that, and he goes for the next song. as of now, he's d/ling "stolen memories" and I'm gonna cancel this annoying bastard when the transfer is at 30%.

don't share your files. you might be the only person he finds with those particular songs.

Just don't share your files, I'm on 56k as well and I don't share mine cause I can't afford to give up the bandwidth that I don't have! :) I want BROADBAND!!

by giving up your 'upload' bandwith, you lose little if anything in 'download' bandwith (theoretically)?

Assuming a full-duplex connection, that should be about right. Modems are so oddball.

i don't think dialup is full duplex. you get roughly 44k dl and about 30k up if you are lucky. but if you are uploading then your download bandwidth goes down.

Quckly rename the song. Then rename a Tupac song with the one he wants to down load. Viola, big surprise when he fires that one up.

Wait till his download gets to 75 percent, cancel it, message him and call him a beautiful being, then put him on ignore.

I make a point of cancelling the downloads of people with DSL/cable or better when they aren't sharing. Modem users - well, I usually let it go, but if they try do do multiple files concurrently, then *snip*.

I dont share my mp3 files unless its the files that I download.
Most of my MP3's are first of all my own copies which I rip from my cd's to put on my MP3-CD player in my car.

However when I do share my mp3's people come and start grabbing my 56K bandwidth that I cant surf (consider I am not downloading). I have limited the upload to 1 but still, when I am websurfing you cant grab tomany at a time. I will however let you grab it when its idle and only cracking RC5. At work I let them grab everything I got, since I have a T1 and I am not bothered.

If your 56K cancel your sharing its easy to do.
I'll dl from 56Kers cause so many of them lie when they put in the description but I dump them ASA I figure out they are in reality 56K.
There ae plenty enough decent connections out here so don't worry about doing your part for the community.

Disable your server. If one doesn't have a persistant connection enabling downloads is doing a disservice to the Napster community.

I know -- I'm a phoneline that maxes out at 24,000 bps in an area with NO hope of broadband and even with that miniscule bandwith I won't even attempt a download from anyone with a connection slower than DSL. (Because ISDN and lower aren't normally 100% uptime/persistant.) I've tried a few downloads from 56K servers only to get canceled.

That does nothing but waste the downloaders time and the servers bandwidth.

If you don't disable your server, don't cancel downloads. If you don't want people downloading, than disable it. Seems pretty simple to me.

Rant over.

Simply move the files you don't wish shared to another folder.

EDIT: After awhile, you can move them back again if you wish. Since I only have a slow 56K connection, I share only a few files at a time - more at night when I am asleep. A download will kill my uploading or surfing speed.

Why are you guys even bothering using Napster if you're not willing to participate? Isn't that selfish? Doens't matter if you're 56k or not. I could argue that i don't like 56k downloading from me because it takes them forever, and i only want to be on for 5 mins.

as I was canceling his songs, he kept on d/ling. I then PMed him saying that "I'll cancel your [bigbadsid] sorry ass." but no reply...he just continues d/ling. after a whole round of that game, it started getting tiresome so I had to disconnect from napster so the idiot would stop d/ling.

and the reason I'm replying now is that he's DOING IT AGAIN! I have never met such as persistent bastard. well, I'll think I'll just have to rename a song like someone suggested earlier.

Moralpanic, who are you to talk about sharing?

Try going back to dial-up. I have to move my mp3 files to another "unshared" location when I am downloading. If not, invariably someone will start to d/l from me when I am 95% finished copying from DSL or T3 and my speed will drop so dramatically, that I get cut off.

It is bad enough d/l'ing and trying to Web surf - I may get cut off anyway if someone trys to d/l also or the pages take forever to load.

Generally, I share only at night when I am asleep and a queue is started. People can d/l whatever they want then (I MOVE mp3 files back into the "shared" folder).

For me, moving mp3 folders back and forth is the answer - it only takes a few seconds each day.
