I've had people try to do that to me, too (I'm a cashier). They'll hand me library cards, or pool/clubhouse/gym membership cards, or, more likely, another store-specific card that won't work.

Yeah I know tell me about it. I gauge my server's tip on the "Dry Mouth" theory. If my glass of water/diet coke/etc gets empty and stays empty for some time, their tip goes down exponentially. I'm lenient if the service is little slow but don't leave me thirsty.
