Stupid People in SUVs or: I got in a wreck today

Everyone say a prayer for my '98 Toreador Red Metalic SVT Ford Contour, she's not doing so well at the moment.

Today, a friend and I carpooled into work so there would be less cars in the snow mess we got.

On the way home, we were driving down one of the major roads in Winston-Salem, taking him home. I was going 25mph, about 60 feet behind a black 2000 Toyota 4-Runner.

Suddenly, her back end let loose (probably didn't have it in 4WD), she hit the guard rail with her tail and turned towards me. I tried stopping, but it wasn't happening fast enough, so I tried to switch lanes as there was nothing in the right lane.

I ended up hitting her my head on to her right front, I believe. I knocked her so she was pointing towards the outside of the road.

On her car, the bumper is knocked loose.

On my car, the radiator is cracked (saw coolant on the ground), the front and front quarter panels are messed up, the clutch seems to be gone, both airbags deployed, the windshield is cracked, and oddly enough the sunroof is opened.

To top it all off, the reason she was out in the snow is because she and her friend wanted to go to the mall. :| :| :|

I really hope my baby isn't totaled.

if they weren't accidents, they'd be called intentionals. Just be glad everybody is ok and living.

Because she was driving too fast for conditions, spun out and hit the guardrail ahead of me

Maybe he was following to closely? Maybe 2 errors happened on the way home.

I was 60+ feet behind her, I was following a safe distance for the weather.

Well then so were you if you couldn't stop.

I was following a safe distance for the weather.

If you were you would not have a busted up car then would you?

That's terrible, but it is your fault. The distance you follow behind depends on the weather conditions and you should always stay far enough behind that you can stop no matter what. I hope your car is ok, and I'm truly sorry. I know how hard accidents are. :(

Then the question needs to be asked, why did you hit her?

So far, everyone has said I'm not to blame.

Hmm . . . who's the stupid one here? ;) Sounds like the Toyota is a bet sturdier than a Contour.

If you couldn't stop in time, it obviously wasn't a safe following distance.

EDIT:

In that case, "everyone" is wrong. Yes, she is to blame for failure to maintain control, but that does not mean that you are magically absolved of being at fault for failure to maintain assured clear distance.

Obviously not since you hit her.

Apparently because my car wasn't stopping on the snow.

Hmmm maybe that's why she lost control as well?

Don't be such a dick. Like somebody else said, it's an accident.

I know it was an accident, and I was very nice to her. It just ticks me off that she was out on the roads because she was wanting to go shopping.

60 foot at 25mph in the snow is not a safe distance. Time to enroll in drivers ed.

So, she should only be out in the snow for activities which you approve of? wtf? Chalk it up to good fortune no one was hurt and stop acting like she's an idiot.

People aren't allowed to shop when it snows? I've never lived where it snows, so maybe I'm not up on all the rules, but the idea that someone can't go shopping because it's snowing out seems silly.

What about grocery shopping? If that's not allowed, how do you eat? Do you store food for the winter like squirrels? Also, if it's too much snow to spend money, why isn't it too much snow to make money?

These snow rules intrigue me.

yeah ... it's absolutely an accident ... and most probably she couldn't do much anyway ... and you didn't keep a distance... or couldn't handle your vehicle in such a way that you would've avoid an accident ...

because like on our subaru forrester (all time 4wd) , when I was driving , even with slow speed , I got turned 100 degrees on the snow .... good thing my dad thought me how to drive in such conditions ... and I was able to get straight on the road without even stopping a car ...

I used to live in an area where snow would get up over the tires on the main road, the fact that it is or isn't in 4X4 makes very little diff on a car kicking out. Thats why alot of SUV drivers end up in the ditch is because they think they can go anywhere.
