why is it that people in suv's come to a compleat stop so they can ever so slowly get over that 1" bump in the road, I mean it's an SUV you know SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE. these people buy thier $30,000+ SUV and they drive them like there in a model T Ford WTF!!!!!:|:Q:disgust:

here's another funny one:

the otherday im driveing down the street and this chevy blazer in front of me for no aparent reason swirves to the right and into some forest preserve taking out a street sign on the way. now instead of throwing that thing into four wheel drive and backing out she calls to have herself pulled out by a tow truck....it just doesn't make any sense if you gonna buy an SUV you might as well get some utility out of it.

I suggest some form of anger management is necessary ;)

BTW, people are stupid drivers regardless of what they are driving.

Who are you to judge a person's choice to buy a certain vehicle. Sure you may not like them, but it's their damn money. They can do whatever the hell they want to with their money and their vehicles so there is nothing you can do about it. Complaining here isn't gonna help;)

Why don't you walk up to one of them and ask THEM why they bought an SUV, then come back and spout off

Maybe she wanted the look of an SUV, but not the price. There's people out there that will buy 2-wheel drive versions of these vehicles... Any logic in that regard completely eludes me!

Most likely is that her husband didn't show her how to use 4wd on it. I know I am guilty of ASSuming my wife knows just as much about vehicles as I do ;)

The real question is what was she doing that made her run off the road and into the woods? Probably talking on a cellphone :p

Actually I used to make fun of those who bought 2wd SUV's too but I found out my g/f's suv was 2wd and I kind of see her point now. For 4wd you're going to pay a lot more for another axle and a transfer case. If you don't plan on using 4wd and just bought the beast so you could carry alot of stuff at once, why buy the 4wd parts too?

Either way I own a 1980 Jeep CJ5 so I'd have to have 4wd ;)

If silly people want to drive their Silly Useless Vehicles like morons there is no stopping them. These are the same people who slow down to a dead stop to make a turn or slow down to 35 mph when the exit comes up on the interstate. Idiot drivers can't be stopped.

Most soccer moms have SUV's because if they get into a crash, they know their kids wont be the ones dying. so sad.

Soccer moms drive their SUVs because they know they suck so badly at driving they need all the help they can get. Thus, when they run into somebody in an econobox instead of reasonable damage being dished out to both parties the person in the econobox is crushed to death and soccer mom can go rent another SUV to drive her kids to practice while her car is being repaired.

most people that drive suv's don't realize how large and dnagerous of a vehicle they are driving. I'm 18, drive an '81 blazer and I know what my truck could do if i hit a small economy car or a minivan. Most people buying all these huge suvs now days take forgranted that they're now driving a dangerous vehicle and special care needs to be taken while driving it. I would be totally for a special liscense for large suv's, and that's probably what's going to need to be done to perhaps ease the problem of morons behind the wheel of suv's.

Dumbest SUV I had ever seen: 2wd Jeep Wrangler. I don't even think it came from the factory like that. My family has a Jeep Cherokee and a 3/4 4x4 truck because we need 4wd, towing, and ground clearance. However since my parents have those vehicles I feel no need to go out and get one. I'm perfectly happy with a car that can take corners and cruise down my 30 mile commute.

Where did you hear about special licensing!? That would be a good idea...because it would also make it so that only people who actually really need an SUV (or care enough ) will bother getting a special license, and that would mean no doctors/lawyers/soccer moms. Hey, my dad has one (doctor) but he doesn't need it. Its a damn big vehicle, drives like a truck and you're right these things are dangerous as hell to be on the receiving end of a collision when you are not the on in the SUV.

To put it another way people need a special license to drive a motorbike and most damage caused in MB accidents is to the driver, and yet in an SUV accident you don't need one but it can cause so much more...I dunno how much harder they are to drive, but certainly it worries me driving around in a smaller vehicle - and its not because I couldn't afford an SUV, I wouldn't get one anyway - gas, lack of performance, etc.

Ooooh... goody! more social engineering. Another law! - good idea.

I drive one because I like it. It's 10 years old, paid for, gets over 20mpg and I have a right to own it. I think now I'll go out and buy another bigger one just for creaming economy cars with!

Wow, what a mature response. Well, next time you see some pedestrians going across the street, slam your brakes on, and realize that your 5,000 lb SUV isn't stopping enough you can reiterate what you just said when you're wiping a 4-year old's face off your front-bumper.

You can't help but admit that at least SOME people get these things to feel safer and although that is fine (watch out for yourself) if a person feels unsafe because they cannot drive properly that is selfish. Its like the senior citizens who can barely even see and yet they are driving around a massive town car! Wow, thats going to stop fast.

Wow what a job of failing to recognize irony.

So, next we will be banning tractor-trailers, dump-trucks, and any other vehicle over 3,000 pounds? - the argument doesn't hold water. I've driven SUV's for the past 20 years. No 4-year old faces on my bumper - ever. Never a problem stopping.

You're not by any chance a LIBERAL are you? :Q

Nobody buys a tractor trailer because they like how it looks, same goes for a dump truck. These are functional vehicles and they serve a purpose. SUVs _can_ serve a purpose. If you like to carry lots of things around, maybe even do a little off-roading thats great, have fun.

All I'm questioning is why do we have yuppies who get scared of a small pot-hole buying massive lincoln navigators to drive to work? Its unecessary. If they want to waste gas and money on it thats one thing but you cannot argue with the fact that a lincoln navigator is going to give me much much more pain than a standard vehicle if I am unlucky enough to get in an accident with one. This is a case of status and prestige and apperance actually compromising public safety.

I don't know of your lifestyle or driving habits but my father is also under the impression that his pathfinder stops very well. "It has great brakes". He even thinks it stops quicker than my mother's Impreza. Sure the brakes might feel quick under your foot but believe me, an SUV does _not_ stop fast - and you might as well forget about any evasive meneauvers. The center of gravity is so high that turning while the car is under duress (too much speed or braking hard) is not easy at all.

Agreed - probably most people don't buy dump trucks because of how they look. But whether your vehicle serves a functional purpose or not - is immaterial.

I also agree Lincoln Navigators are a big, expensive car. A freind of mine has one, and I asked him if it was a "real 4x4" - he said "sure it is" - I said - great - race you to the top of that logging road? - Obviously he didn't take his $60,000 rig up there. He still has a right to own it.

Whether you are at personal risk on the road because someone owns one... open to question. You're at far more risk from ANY driver of ANY vehicle than a particular vehicle type. They don't drive themselves. I don't know how many SUV's you've driven, but mine has always stopped just fine. It's 10 years old - so apparently with 160,000 miles of driving, the brakes work just dandy.

As far as evasive manuvers? - I was being tailgated for a couple of miles by an idiot. Saw flasher barricades ahead - accelerated toward them, and did an 8 foot lateral move and returned to center. Of course someone learned a lesson about tailgating that day. Manuverablity is not the issue either.

This whole question is much like the "guns kill people" threads. You can put an idiot into a Ferrari, and it won't handle for crap. A skilled, experienced and aware driver is a safe driver regarless of his or her choice of vehicle. You characterize "ALL" SUV's into the same category. Mine does not have a high center of gravity. It handles quite well due to the polurethane bushings all the way around - the Michelin radials at 80 p.s.i., and the unmodified CG. SOME SUV's are crap - but be fair about it... not all SUV's fit the category, and not all drivers who have them are idiots. Although some are - it's hardly a reason to look for a new law. We have enough of those.

I'm in favor of transportational Darwinism. Remove all the guardrails from the roads. Eventually mankind will stop driving off the road.:Q

hehe, I suppose you're right...I normally just tap the brakes hard when someone tail gates me. If that doesn't teach them I tap them harder and really drop a lot of speed :)

Hey you know the gaurdrail idea would work. All of the inatentive drivers would eventually be off the roads!

I only wish people were _aware_ that their big navigator could seriously harm somebody else if they hit them - more so than a regular vehicle.

Speaking of bad SUV's I saw the cadiallac ones. Now if that could drive over more than some rough gravel my name isn't Skoorb. Their ground clearance is nill, just a big silly looking block on wheels.

SUV's are for pansy drivers who do nothing but kill the ozone, waste gas, and endanger smaller cars on the road. I can understand people buying Volvo's or Benz's to make their family feel safer on the road, but SUV's are a pure threat to the other car. Like that one guy said, if you truly need a SUV for the space and size, then you have every right too. But today, its just a fad that so many people are getting SUV's for the hell of it. And it shows that SUV's are rising among the most dangerous vehicles on the road today.
