WindowsCE is basicly a smaller version of Windows, has the same interface with a start button and everything. PocketPC OS is different and that is mostly used by smaller hand helds like the Ipaq.

yes pretty much, when the 1st PDA's came with the MS OS it was Windows CE (Compact Edition) I think they had 3 versions of it, then it evolved into CE 2000 also know as pocket pc, now we got Pocket PC 2002. I guess since they got so much more functional there called PC's.

UPDATE ----

I may have found some good info here....

In the last two years, Windows CE has expanded beyond a standalone operating system to become an important "enabling technology."
CE is the general-purpose foundation upon which other Microsoft groups build platforms aimed at specific device markets.
Within Microsoft, the Pocket PC, Handheld PC, SmartPhone (formerly "Stinger"), Automotive PC,
TV Set-Top Box and MSN Web Companion groups are all "customers" of the Windows CE platform group.
Microsoft calls these "go-to-market solutions" groups. Each customer group adds value unique to their product and markets the resulting software.
For example, Pocket PC 2002 is built on top of Windows CE 3.0.
Pocket PC 2002 defines a target hardware platform (quarter-VGA display, ARM processor, etc.) and then adds a shell (APIs) and PIM applications that are optimized for that platform.
Pocket PC 2002 also includes enhancements to Windows CE 3.0, such as multiple ROM execute-in-place (XIP) regions that make upgrades easier.
In most cases, OS enhancements added by the "go-to-market solutions" groups are migrated back into the Windows CE platform, so that all the groups eventually benefit.

Before PocketPC, they had Win CE 1.0, 2.0, and 2.11. These were put on PDAs called Palm Size PCs or on PDAs with other generic names. Since Pocket PC came out (CE3 + a layer of other stuff), they're Pocket PCs. One PDA that has CE3 but doesn't have PocketPC is the Casio BE-300.

My CE 2.11 PDA has: a note taker, contacts, calendar, tasks, some connection managing stuff, solitaire, voice recorder, clock, inbox. That's pretty much it. A lot less than PocketPC has, though if you look around, they still have CE 2.11 mp3 players, video players, picture viewers, many games, etc available.

CE3.0 is the skeleton, PocketPC2002 is the skin. Think of it that way.

The CE platform provides all of the basic hardwire functionality. The PocketPC2002 OS is just the interface chosen for Microsoft based PDAs. Gas station pumps, bank teller machines, etc. all use their own "skin" on top of CE.
