Stupid Olympics question

Well I'll be damned...I never paid much attention to that until now. I remember seeing this during the Womans Opening match of Table Tennis b/w America and Korea.

Because English is the universal/official world language.

No it's not. Its not even the most commonly spoken language in the world.

Either way, it's the most important language in the world. Almost every educated foriegner takes English as a second language becuase without it, you're limited in your posibilities in international employment.

err not to mention... its all about money. Advertisers sponsoring the games are mostly American, news and media as well, all mostly english because we blow it up bigger than every body else

No, the asian languages are the most speaken in the world.

On the other hand, almost all major businesses speak english, it's safe to say that english is the major economic language in the world.

Isn't French the official language of the Olympics? I swear I remember hearing that while watching the Olympics in some past year. I don't think it was in 1992 when they were in France, either; I was only 10 at the time and I don't think I'd remember that.

I may be wrong but I think they do the announcements at the venues in French, English, and the host countries language.

Tends to happen when your country is overpopulated to the max.

that only considers the first language spoken...i would be interested in seeing the languages most spoken by anyone (not necessarily their first language)

I wonder how long it would take to ask every person in the world how many different languages they speak? 😛

Roughly 7392 days if I did the math right figuring 10 seconds per person non stop 24 hours per day.

And in that time an entire generation of new people would have been born... yeah I think we're going to need more than one person on this.

which is irrelevant. what matters is how many people of importance use it for business and politics between nations. english has become the defacto standard.

Wouldn't a country use it's own language on it's uniforms? Or is there some kind of Olympic rule?
