Does this make sense to anyone:

Record last updated on 05-Dec-2000.
Record expires on 02-Feb-2001.
Record created on 02-Feb-1999.
Database last updated on 5-Feb-2001 22:33:40 EST.

The domain expired on Friday, but they still say its unavailable, above is the last part of the WhoIS output. I dont understand why i cant register this, its really pissing me off. Its an awesome domain name and i already have a web app for it, i just need the name! some squatter has sat on it for two years and never used it.

Yeah, they contact you early but, if you don't respond they give you extra time. Plus, as with any big corp, it takes them time to get anything done.

Many domain names have been hold for over a year past the expire date. The only way to get them is to keep checking the whois every day and hope you get lucky. Otherwise, try to contact the current owner and offer to buy the name or ask them to start the proceedings to transfer the domain name to you. Your best bet and the least hassle would be finding a new name to use.

I read something awhile ago that said that Networksolutions is going to start auctioning off expired names.

I dont want to contact the current owner, they will see that it is worth something and get more money for it, a LOT more, id rather pay the $70 to NSI

Lol, ya and with NSI you don't actually own the domain name. They have about a 3 month grace period on expired domain names, and nothing comes out of lockup with them anymore AFAIK, everything goes to their auction site if it has value.

NSI has started keeping expired domains so that they can auction them off at a later date and make more money. I watched one for about two months before finally giving up hope. Just went to check and it looks like it got a new owner last month, 5 months later.

It's simple, make an offer to the current owner.

So what if he's late on his payment, doesn't mean he doesn't get to own the domain any more :)

Maybe his check got lost in the mail..

not likely, not worth crying over, you ARE NOT going to get the domain for $70 or whatever they charge.

The dot com business is dirty, and while people are still making money, it will remain that way.
