Stupid network card !!!

I bought a Linksys network card for use with my DSL modem but it just won't assign the proper IP address (192.168.1.1) to it. It keeps giving it another IP address that isn't compatible with the modem.

Also it keeps finding "mass storage device" and asking that I install it too. It doesn't exist so that seems to be a glitch as well.

I thought I would be done in 5 minutes, 2 hours later it still isn't installed.

BTW: I'm using windows 2000...

That's why I'm only using (cheap) RealTek cards: they always work

As for your card, you can probably bring this one back to the shop and get a new one, or buy a different NIC.

It was $5 after rebate so it was cheap. I like real realtek to, never had a problem with them.

I like Realtek cards too. They always work even with old drivers.

I'm trying to get a computer with a Linksys network card to configure with my DSL modem.

It works fine with another computer that has a realtek card. All I did was set it to "obtain IP address automatically" and it took the DSL modem IP of 192.168.1.1
, the linksys card looks exactly the same, set it to "obtain IP address automatically" but it keeps assigning it a different IP (169.254.37.5).

Is it just the network card or is windows 2000 interfering somehow ??????

BTW: I'm only using one computer at a time.

D-Link is fairly inexpensive, around 10 dollars here.. Very good quality too..

The 169.254.x.x ip address is a loopback address. That means you're card is installed improperly or you have a connectivity problem.

actually.. its not a loopback address... but rather a Windows Default IP address. The loopback is always 127.0.0.1
Usually when you get a default IP, it means one of two things... bad RJ-45... or no connectivity.
Make sure all the cables are in tightly.... try swapping ends.. that helps alot (no kidding).
