Not to bust your chops too bad, but since you know the dangers, why wasn't your machine secured before you even hooked it to anything outside your room?

Yea, the people who say they only use 'common sense' in the anti-virus thread would do well to read this.

Damn, but you're ornery, Ornery. Whether or not his mom was "stupid," bob970 is responsible for the security of his own machine, and he obviously knows more about the dangers than she does.

The rule is easy. Never connect to the web before you've installed your protections, including AV, a firewall and maybe anti-spyware software.

Got Ad-Aware? :)

I have had to go work on my Mom's computer to remove viruses (i know its virii, but I want the ignorant people to read this too....:D) several times. She now has a list of extensions to never open on a sticky note right above her computer. Telling her wasn't enough. Since then she has been fine. She has even not opened several virii that someone sent her. :D Parents can learn :D

I believe the technical name for that is operator malfunction. ;)

A lot of good that will do with some of the Klez variants. You don't have to open any attachements for them. All you have to do is click on the letter in your In Box. :Q

I also took your advice and disabled Windows Scripting. Won't that stop these type of virii?

BTW how effective is Scriptblocking? If it won't stop this kind of virus then what purpose does it serve? There was a virus 4-6 months ago that installed just by looking at the email. I have had scriptblocking on ever since. Also many websites have some kind of virus that installs simply by visiting their sites. One of my friends was browsing some place like rotten.com (ugly place, don't ever go) and got a virus.

I would have been just as tactful as you Harvey, if he hadn't called his mom stupid! And now, " i've never got a virus before... its locked down decently... Guess that means you don't back up your data either, since you've never lost any before? I've never lost data, but I still backup. I never caught a virus, but still use AV software. Would it be that much of a bother to enable Email protection?
