Stupid Me Errant Screwdriver Shuttle AN35N

Thinking I would upgrade the stock Athlon XP fan I had a horrible time getting off the heatsink. The screwdriver jumped and scarred the motherboard right at what I suppose is the "northbridge" - the heatsinc right below the CPU. There are lots of small traces between this northbridge and the CPU and I took out probably 6 of them with the screwdriver.

The funny thing is that everything is running fine - graphics, CPU torture tests, etc.

Am I on borrowed time or did I scratch something unused or are those traces somewhere inside the board and blow the surface?

Confused

I'd go out and buy a lotto ticket right now, 'cause you appear to be the luckiest bastid I ever did see. :)

I put an old credit card under the edge of the lug on the cpu socket.
You can cut them down or bend them.
They are tougher than heck also.
I slipped a long time ago on a mobo and was lucky it still worked.

Best wishes that your mobo keeps humming along.:sun:

*** RED ALERT ***What was your screwdriver tip doing on that end of the CPU socket? The end of the clip that has a screwdriver receptacle should be at the top edge of the CPU socket on an AN35N Ultra. Either your clip is in the heatsink backwards, or your whole heatsink and clip are on backwards.

Let's review: wrong, right. There'll be a quiz later. :D

If your CPU has survived with a reversed heatsink, make that two lottery tickets. ;) If there's some other explaination, disregard my rant :D

Yes, thanks, mechbgon. I have 1 3200 XP with a retail heatsinc and fan and it is easy to work with. THIS PC has a 2200 XP and the little clip on the heasync is probably 1/4 the size. I was trying to get to the "wrong side" of the heatsync just to see if I had any luck. Bad idea all the way around! The credit card idea is a good one. Will adopt.

I thought the heatsink connectors for the socket on the AN35N faced towards the outside of the motherboard. With this being the case, if you were just trying to get that out-edge heatsink connector off, hitting the traces would not have been an issue. But, I do think you are damn lucky. :) :)
