Stupid laptop tricks

Looks like the modem port got yanked out (still plugged into the wall and moved away?) and it was a creative way to re-attach a modem connection to it 🙂

why spend money on a modem when you can just pick up a telephone pluig from radio shack and put the two wires going inside randomly?

Agreed... the flip out modem tab on those Toshiba models is a "break" waiting to happen. for a good solution to get it back up and running.

No, because a PCMCIA modem card could have been easily ordered, or an external modem. Also  because this is not a personal machine, it is a corporate one. At least this user's department will pay for replacement or repair.

Without having opened the thing (and I probably won't) I'd guess the wires originate from the inside and are just pulled out long enough to reach this new modem. The bolts you see have the wires connected to the undersides of their heads with Y-connectors, the modem itself is scotch-taped to the laptop.

if it was a corporate laptop, surely it was assigned to a user (inventory, asset control or some BS like that) and there must be a record of who had it. Or are they just going to assign a new laptop to him?

It does have an asset tag on it, so I'm sure we can find out who it was issued to. We just haven't bothered to check yet as we have other projects with priority right now. Plus it's so old its user may not even work here any more. If he/she still works here, I'll find out what they're using now.

Hahaha I can only assume this guy knows his IT department is incompetant, and rather than wait 3 months for them to fix the problem (broken internal modem jack) he went to radio shack and did it the fast way. Good for him.

I've been in the IT department since mid-November, and it hasn't seemed incompetent to me. For all I know this is something that happened long before I was here, perhaps when the dept. had a very different staff, which from what I hear may have been a bit closer to that word you misspelled.

Oh, and if you had bothered to pay attention and think while reading this thread (you did read, right?) you would have learned that this model among others uses a flip-out modem jack (think X-jack) which he probably broke, and then put his own solution on (costing he and his department some money and grief) rather than simply order an analog PCMCIA modem card. Too bad he was as incompetent at that as you are at reading. Troll.

There're only 15 pics (yeah, I know it's a bit much), but that site has a search function, and I have a few good looking ladies in my collection. More if you check the NSFW box 😉
