I'm 18, and it never mattered to me nor my friends.

I know this dude who's parents bought him a 2001 or some newer year infiniti qx4. He was pissed because it was a base model. (I think there were only two options.. 4wd and heated seats.) he had neither.

So he totalled it. And you know what he got? His dad bought him a 1987 honda accord.

He deserved it.

If I have kids, and they total a car, I wouldn't buy them a nice one at all. hell, I had to pay for every car I have ever owned.

did he total it on purpose?

Stupid b!tch. On the note of not caring in the age of grunge, I grew up in the 90's, and I cared, but not like that. I wasn't willing to go to those extremes, and was happy if I was given any car. Not that I was EVER given a car. BTW, I just turned 30 July 19th, so is that old? I feel like I am.

for the kids, the key is to find a nice car for cheap. a used nice car is still a nice car, and it won't break the parent's wallet, and it won't offend the kid's clique. But kids are too dumb to figure this out.

If everyone just had a Festiva, they'd all have a lot more money, the roads would be safer, and there'd be less pollution.

I think I'm one of the few rare people in the US who doesn't have a car, doesn't want one, and gets by really well without it. If I need a car, borrow my mom's, take a cab or train, or rent one. Makes me happy, i save about $3400 just on insurance, not to mention other costs like gas, maintenance, and payments!

I only had one car in high school: 1972 Ford Galaxy 4 door

There were other kids that had nicer cars, but so what? If we wen't out "scamming" (picking up girls) we too one of their cars. Otherwise, no biggie.

To this day (I'm 30-something) I still have older cars. One 1996 S-10 that I bought with 28k on it is the closest to new I've gotten. Just not important enough to me.

I have a 12yo son, and we have an agreement. I'll either pay his insurance or I'll buy his car (within reason... $4k in today's dollars is my limit, most likely I'll give him either the Volvo or the truck.) If he doesn't like the car I choose, he's responsible for paying for it and maintaining it.

I refuse to pay for everything. He needs to get a job and work for the vehicle. If he doesn't want to work (or not allowed to, depending on grades and such) then he walks.

I've always been amazed at the kids at school whose parents bought them brand new cars and such. Just wierd.

My best friend in HS and I had probably the two worst cars in the lot at our school. They were both over 20 years old, rusting out, and slow.

My friends car was the best, it was this ancient boat of a car from the mid 70's, painted a light yellow. He installed one of those cheap multi-horns in it and we'd drive around the parking lot playing "la cucaracha".

We both turned out just fine. And we're driving slightly better cars now :D

I bought an older chevy corsicca for $1200 (I worked for the money to buy it) when I was 18 and when to tech school. It lasted me 4 months then some moron totaled it. I bought a newer corsicca and drove it 3 months and some other morons(they also stole a bronco and parked it some train tracks and watched a train ram it.) stole it blew up the motor and I drove an older but still in good shape 63 ford galaxy.(the only ford that we have ever had that was woth keeping)
So now im looking at a 96 grand am. (yes i did go look at the new 03 sunfire and caviler)

It sounds like the girl needs a spanking(no matter what dr spock says)

If my kid (hopefully in 5-7yrs) wasn't grateful for a car that I bought them, I'm taking it back and getting them a used bike.

No, they're ungrateful morons. You give them something, and it's never enough. They always want more, want something else, and want it now. I think parents are to blame for kids being like that.

I concur

dunno. cant blame the parents when the kid's peers are like that.
