Stupid Job Interview / Test Questions

I went to Comcast today to apply for a job, and was taken to a computer to answer questions. The first part was math, questions like:

5 + 5 = (A)6 (B)8 (C)10 (D)12 (E)20

Then it went on to the "Same or Different" portion. I was shown two numbers, and I would have to check off S if they were the same, D if they were different. Example:

620 620 (S) (D)
6594 2738 (S) (D)

OK, I thought this was all bad enough, but then came the last part of the test, the questions about me and my work ethics. Started out with stuff like "Were you often late for work at your last job?", and thrown in with these questions were the absolute stupidest questions I've ever seen. Each one had to be answered by checking off Agree or Disagree. I wrote some of them down, here they are, word for word:

There are 7 days in a week. Agree Disagree

There are 50 hours in a day. Agree Disagree

There are 80 hours in a month. Agree Disagree

You can count to 10. Agree Disagree

You can read well enough to complete this survey. Agree Disagree

I swear to god these are the actual questions. I thought Lowes "test" was pretty bad with:

I am an honest person (Yes) (No)

That was my favorite until today, as an honest and a dishonest person would both choose yes. I really don't want to work for Comcast any more.

haha, i was looking at your first question as if those were variables 🙂 um, what position is this for?

This is for a "Tech" position, like Jim Carey in "Cable Guy", the guy who comes to your house and fixes your cable when it isn't working.

Probably one of their IT tech positions.

If that's Comcast's interview test, I can only imagine what Verizon's is.

$ = (a) dollars, (b) cents

🙂

They should have a question asking "Are you an idiot?", that way, if you do something dumb they can fire you for lying on your application.

Wow.... WOW.

I would have just screwed with the test.

5 + 5 = (A)6 (B)8 (C)10 (D)12 (E)20

620 620 (S) (D)
6594 2738 (S) (D) (both)

There are 7 days in a week. Agree Disagree

There are 50 hours in a day. Agree Disagree

There are 80 hours in a month. Agree Disagree cannot count that high

You can count to 10. Agree Disagree

You can read well enough to complete this survey. Agree Disagree (Draw an X through 'agree' to eliminate that option. Then draw an X through 'disagree' to eliminate that option. Then draw a confused face because all the options have been eliminated 😕. Skip the question.)

I am an honest person (Yes) (No)

Hey i just got a call from comcast today about the Support tech job. They want me to come in and take the test.

Why would a company with terrible service just perpetuate it with questions like that?

Why don't they try to "make a difference"?

I'm surprised they don't have any questions like

A customer calls and complains his cable service has been out for 10 minutes.

YOU:
A. Apologize for the inconvenience and offer to take a trouble report
B. Ask why the customer waited so long to call
IV. Explain the many advantages of our UltraMega Package for $150/month and attempt to upsell the customer to that level of service
D. Hang up
7. Give the customer the telephone number for his local Comcast business office
X. A and E only
F. None of the above
R. All of the above

Thats how it is at most tech companies.

It's almost like they want to suck at tech support.

Those stupid questions are most likely just to make sure you are paying attention and not just randomly marking answers down.

Probably because this position pays about $8/hr so they can't be very picky. The test is probably justified as weeding out the exceptionally dumb.

I thought of that, but there were just too damn many stupid questions for that to make sense.
