Sooo Yeah. I work at a grocery store for a little less than 4 and 1/2 years and its finally driving me crazy.

-Just stupid people in general!

-$&^(%@ who write checks!

-Idiots not getting the right item for coupons

-People who are in the store 5 times a day

-People who come to express with to much.

-Beleive me there is about 100 more...

I hate to just dump this on you, but I just had to do it. It helps me :)
Every day I am more and more convinced that people have got everything wrong. his is not how our lives are supposed to be, and I'm more convinced that the general population is not fit to govern themselves. I'm not trying to say I have everything figured out. But the way things are just cannot be right.

EDIT: More stuff:

PLEASE! HAND me the check, i know its hard to do, but when my hand is out waiting I really hate it when they just set it down in front of, or on the side of where my hand is waiting! The SAME goes for Change!

I agree, you've been working at a grocery store way too long if half that stuff annoys you.

I've never really understood the check thing - why do people get so angry about it? It takes 60 seconds? Are you really that impatient?

Checks are not always a bad thing. Its when people get slow, 60 sec is a "good" time. You should see and old lady write a check.

Also, when you stand there for however long it takes us to right up all your stuff you NEED to be writing your check. But no, people wait till your done, they fumble through the purse and find the check book, ask me for a pen... So i stand there for a coupla min. while you just stood and did nothing while i wrang up your stuff.

And then there are the ones, the ones that will write a check for less than $5. Thats the worst. Thoes people wouldent be SO bad, if they would write it out for like $20 more so the next poor guy they go to dosent have to go through it also.......

d00d, it comes with the territory. This is the life you have chosen or been channeled into. Don't let it get to you. There are many people with families who would give anything to have your job at lesser pay. Yes, it's frustrating when grandma is fumbling through her purse for a 20 cent coupon and then you wait again for her to find her checkbook. I have waited behind these people and sometimes I get aggravated. It's all just part of life. Put a song in your mind for those times. Sing a silent melody and be grateful for the good things you have. No matter how bad you think your situation is there are people who are genuinely suffering far more than you.

That's my sermon for tonight. I will now exit stage left.;)

Working in retail sucks .. I spent some time as a pharmacy tech in a kinda snobby area ... people would bitch and complain if they had to wait more than like 5 minutes for their prescriptions. It wouldn't be so bad if we were a slow, or non busy place, but we were averaging around 800 prescriptions per day at one point (which meant when 50 people came at the same time to wait for ttheir prescription, it would take 15 to 30 minutes to get everything typed, filled, and checked ... ahh well I work in Tech Support (same company, but in the call center now) and its a million times better.

my advice: GET OUT OF RETAIL AS SOON AS YOU CAN

or if you can tolerate it .. go for a management spot as long as your district/regional/area (or whatever you call it) Supervisor (or manager) is NOT a real pain in the neck to deal with, cause they sometimes like to stop bye and say hello (or yell at the store manager for things that are not his/her fault and that he/she has no control over)

Also yes, 60 seconds for a check is a long time, I could type 3 or 4 prescriptions, or count several hundred tablets in that time, while at the same time taking refill requests, or dealing with an insurance companies at the same time ... its sorta like ..... stand there and watch the line get longer for a minute, but get nothing done, ...or... get 1 minute more caught up ... hmm which would you want to do?

I worked at Krogers for 5 years and I have no idea how I made it that long. I got wrote up 5 times for customer relations problems while there all during the last 3 years after I have moved up to cashier. I actually had one customer ask another employee if I was disturbed :) one day while working express. I don't know how people do that for 40 years. I would have killed somebody long before 10 years rolled round.

The people that really got me ticked off were the food stampers. Now I don't have a problem with people needing a little help but 80% of the people that I saw on them wasted most of the money on crap. Atleast half their budgets went towards pop and junkfood and then they would blow whatever cash they had on cigs and beer.

If i'm lucky i'll quit sometime this school year. The year is better casue of college i onyl work the weekends. :)

Express is the worst. Wait, Express with Rhonda is the WORST. Lucky for me I get to spend most of my time stocking. Thats just what you get for beeing the best. I'm not braging or anything, but I'm very reliable, and I dont complain about anything, so i do a lot of "odd" jobs.

I'm actully EXTREMLY nice to the customers, I bend over backwards for them. We are an extremly freindly-customer service chain.

Now, you've done it, you mentioned food stamps.

Dont get me wrong, there are lots of people that need help, and I'm ok with that, I'm pretty much a communist for goodness sakes. But I have very little respect for most of these people. They pretty much refuse to work, and they come in and spend OUR money on junk. ALWAYS junk. Some of them i do respect, like the grocery store "life'rs" the ones whow will never leave. I can see that they work 40 hrs a week and do as much as they can.

But the people who come in with 5 kids and look like they just got up an noon will not have my respect.

Reform i want in Food stamps:
-NON-Smokers ONLY. No longer will people be allowed to buy their food with MY money, and then WASTE theirs on Smokes
-Should only be allowed on certain items. Good Wholesome food.

These people come in and spend $26 of MY money on expensive Flavored coffee, Makes me just want to refuse the sale.............

FOBs who have no grasp of english trying to operate the self-checkout machine which, in big red letters, says "CLOSED." its not like the aisle light was on, either.

Oh i love self checkouts.

Kmart near my house used to have them. They decided things would be better if they just had 2 lanes open and that would be fine.

When i goto KMart it is NEVER for more than 5 things, self checkout was great, i NEVER had to wait. Now i spend like 3/4ths of the time i'm in the store in line.

Come to think of it, maybe thats why I have such a problem with work. I'm not BRAIN DEAD like the KMart checkers......

Like this cute girl, prob 16-18 just dumb as a rock, at first i just thought she was doing it to be a nice happy employee (like i do) but i got up there and i realised she had no brain at all.

EDIT: Whats a FOB?

Well it seems I'm beeing "saved" I'm moving to dairy. Dairy isant really "easy" but is way less stressfull and you get to spend all your time stocking. Its independant, I've done it a few times, and it is like heaven.

AND we have another tent sale next week, so i'll be out there most of the week. Also heaven.

Turning the tables a bit...

I hate cashiers who hand me a pile of stuff (bills, change on top, and receipt on top of that).

WTF am I supposed to do now? Argh! I then stand there for several seconds, putting everything down on the counter/belt/etc. while I put the receipt into a bag (is it THAT hard to do yourself instead of giving it to me???), put the change in my pocket, and then put the bills in my wallet.

Years ago, cashiers would put the receipt in a bag, hand you change so you could put it in your pocket and then hand you the paper money. Much easier.

I AGREE. In my 2 years or so as a checker i have NEVER put the change on top of anything. They get that first, then the paper. And if its cash or check the receipt goes into the bag (unless they want it in their hands). Credit card receipt almost always goes in the hand (unless they want it in bag) the CC one is just habit, since we dont print the card # on the receipt anymore, but most people want to use them to keep track and be save i guess.

Never really cared for working dairy. The stink of milk follows you around the rest of the day. They finally bumped me up to front end supervisor which pretty much meant I was a bagger that ran a register when people went to break and other odd jobs around the store. My favorite thing to do was to avoid work by hanging out with the produce guy talking crap :).

I'm with ya on the people who bring too much crap into the express lanes. I was at Target buying a cordless phone today, so I went to the 20 items or less aisle, and what do ya know, some mom with her three kids buying a full shopping cart full of crap.I'm usually reall laid back about that sorta thing, but I wanted to go HOME.. I wonder if it's a case of not being attentive enough to see the huge sign, or being enough of an ass to not care?

The checker shoulda sent em elsewhere but she was a dull knife, a 20 year old FOB who probably couldn't read the sign herself.

dam the express!

Our express is 12 or less.

People need to realize that is for a REASON!

I've only ever sent a few people away. I tried to get this fkin lady to go once, but there was not another customer in sight. So we argued and i let her go, i just wish that i had had like 10 customers show up durring that time. Of course not a sole did. but the second she left i had 3 customers waiting.

Its the best when the other customers get on the ones with too much. :)

I was reading one of your newsletter thingies and it said one of the biggest complaints from customers is OTHER customers, blocking the lanes, and crap like that. It really is anoying how inconciderate people are to each other, and this is South Dakota for goodness sakes.

Absolutely. Who really feels like wasting a minute or more of their life standing in line while someone writes a check? The most annoying part is people stand in line and stare vacantly until they get the total and only then do the write out a check. As if they weren't sure of what the date is or what store they're shopping at until the cashier tells them their total...

My other complaint is people who use credit cards for the smallest items they can possibly find. As George Carlin said "Tic tac's are not a major purchase. Scrape some fvcking cash together!".

Well the main reason I hated the slow check writers was while I was on the register my goal was to get people the hell out of my line so I can run away to some other part of the store and hide. The whole time grandma is writing out her check more and more customers are showing up in my line and making my job, well avoiding my job ;), harder. Atleast half of the other employees thought the sameway. Ahh the joys of minimum wage :).

i used to work for a grocery store, and have experienced everything you said and more. The store i worked at had their regulars, (old persons) that would come in 3 times a day and buy a piece of fruit and something from the deli, for breakfast lunch and dinner.
Thou during my time as a manager, I've had milk, soda, pots, pans, and glass wear thrown at me by either irrate customers or people i've apprehended trying to steal something. I beat the crap out of one dude that took a swing at me for no reason.
