Stupid friend asks question: How do I start a company cleared for Dept'o'Defense contracts?

Yeah... he wants to know how to go about starting a business and getting it cleared to take on contracts for the US Department of Defense, and/or any other agencies that would require cleared companies.

Anyone with any information on how to go about this process - please post here so I can sink his battleship. Oh yes, and he has a security clearance of somesort already.

Do you need clearances for all of their contracts? I know people that bid on their contracts and they certainly haven't had any special clearances or anything like that.

Don't think so - but I think he's going to be specifically looking at contracts of sensitive natures.

Security clearance "of some sort"? Contracts "of sensitive natures"?

I bet he's so full of his own BS that he actually forgets that he's lying.

Is he looking for DARPA SBIR ( Small business intitiave research ... ah damn, I forget the acronym ) contracts? Sometimes they're limited (i.e. no foreign nationals, etc). All he'd need is to get some -very- skilled people together (and assuming that he is skilled), make some deep contacts and network with the agencies, slowly build a reputation, and eventually he could win some classified contracts =)

(All above is AFAIK)

Something like that. I don't really know what he's on, but it's probably crack. He wants to start his own firm up though. And yes - you can go looking for DoD contracts - that's what bidding is for.

A comp sci instructor that I had did jobs for the department of defense I believe. He was former army though, so that may have helped with clearance. I've heard of quite a few independent contractors that do jobs for DOD. They're just like any other business, from time to time they need outside help.

edit: except for the fact that sometimes you are coding guidance systems for cruise missles
