So my Yamaha F1 Burner is pretty much dead...

I call up last week and get an RMA number and the form to send to them...

So i just now look at the form im gonna mail tommorow and i notice this in BIG print on the form:

"PLEASE INCLUDE A COPY OF YOUR DATED SALES RECEIPT. If you do not include a copy of your sales receipt, it will NOT be considered a warranty repair and you will be provided with an estimate prior to service being performed."

Uhm, so they expect me to provide a recept for a drive I bought 5-6 months ago?! Whatta load of CRAP! I've gone through MANY rma's before and never have they asked for a receipt.

Um, quite a few companies do that. How are they supposed to know if it's still within their X month/year warranty? A "Manufactured on" date label tells nothing because it could have sat on the shelf for a year before being sold

Save your receipts from now on. No problem.

You save every receipt from your purchases for the last few years?

The manufacturing date on my drive is November 2002. Their warranty period is one year.

if it really is within the warranty period and you did buy it from an authorized reseller, maybe its ok to photochop one?

my dad got it for me from bestbuy around nov/dec

I'm still steaming about my Memorex 40x burner that died after 4 months and I sent it back to factory for repair only to have them ship it back as NPF(no problem found). It still makes a coaster on every burn. :frown: The funny thing is it's still under warranty for another 2 months but I'm not wasting another $10 to ship it back AGAIN.

Lesson learned, never buy Memorex again.

Which I am sure they don't know...

i had a 2x burner drive that I flashed and it died on me. I was pissed (it just went out of warranty by a month too) and i called them and told them what happened. They said "too bad", they have a disclaimer on the flash program. They suggested that i send it in and pay them for repair, or better yet, go buy a new yamaha burner. I asked to speak to a supervisor and told them that I think it's ridiculous that i flashed my burner with their program and it died on me. I also told them I've been buying yamaha products for a long time (audio equipment, musical instruments, burners), but why should i buy anything else when the first thing that ever breaks on me, i get treated like this? he said to send it back in and they will take care of it for me. so they just replaced it with a newer model for me. pretty good service i would say.

The warranty period is from the D.O.P., not the day it was built

I understand that, but there is no physical way possible the drive is OUT of warranty considering it wasnt even BUILT a year ago. Get my point?

Several years, in fact. I have a 'receipts' file drawer indexed by manufacturer name. Only receipts for stuff on which I might need warranty service. I don't save my receipts for chewing gum, groceries, or gas.

It is pretty much standard for any manufacturer to require a copy of an original sales receipt because warranties are extended only to the orginal retail purchaser and/or only when purchased through an authorized retail channel. Its been this way only for as long as I can remember. Its certainly nothing 'new', except perhaps new to you.

However, you may usually be exempted from this requirement if you received the item as a gift. But, you may also lose that exemption if you failed to return any warranty/registration card in the alloted period of time indicating on the warranty card that you received the product as a gift.

I save all my receipts for anything of value. Now if I could only remember to fill out my warranty cards before I lose them (I wish everything had working online warranty registrations).

I feel for you if they won't take it back despite the drives being on the market < 1 year...but saving receipts is a habit worth getting into. Can't blame it on Yamaha since any manufacturer has a right to be this way too.

I agree... they should take it back!
Except, he cannot prove he has any legitimate claim to the warranty. Warranties are generally not transferrable in the vast majority of cases nor are they honored unless the product was purchased through an authorized reseller channel. It doesn't matter that the drive isn't a year old yet, if the conditions of the warranty are not met.

There are these things called 'conditions' and 'rules', pesky things.

I do. Big purchases are always on a seperate receipt. I put it in the box so I don't lose it. If the box has to go, then i put it in a folder i keep in my filing cabinet. Works great! 🙂

Ditto, it's not that hard to just keep the receipt in the box just in case.
