find the food they are eating / came from and make sure thats gone first

then, GET FLYPAPER. its cheap and its a miracle invention. just hang a couple spirals in the kitchen and you will catch them like flys! even if you are tempted, DO NOT TOUCH the flypaper. you will regret it. but you WILL NOT regret following my advice.

Fill a wine glass with cider vinegar (or any container with the sides sloping away from each other), put a few drops of dish detergent in.

Technical explanation: flies love the vinegar, soap raises the meniscus up the sides, the flies are hard wired to expect the meniscus to be at a certain place and slide in with surprised looks on their faces.

Excellent idea, sounds like a fun science experiment for my kids to do over the weekend. 😛

They might be fungus gnats. If you have any houseplants around, check to see if the bugs are also congregating there. Fungus gnats lay larvae in the soil of potted plants that hatch and eat the roots. They can also breed in sink drains, so plug the sink, fill it with hot water, and let it run out a few times.
That might be what I've got in my house. Do they tend to like water damaged wood? We're getting our kitchen completely redone this month (the walls, plumbing, and floor) so they may have to disappear if their habitat is destroyed. 😎

No idea if they like water damaged wood.

Our house is clean and I've only ever noticed fruit flies when I was living alone, because I'm a slob, but we had little flies once and wondered what they were and they were indeed from one of our indoor plants!

Opposite for me; I noticed them when I was living with slobs, but now live alone and haven't seen them, I'm very neat.

Take a bowl and put enough wine or other alcohol in to cover the bottom. Cover with plastic wrap and poke several small holes in the top. The flies are attracted to the wine, but can't find the holes out and drown. Takes a few days to get them all, but it does work. Fair warning: the wine develops a disgusting mold on top nearing the week mark.
