Stupid expensive photography hobby!

Well my wallet is now $500 lighter.

Picked up the Canon BG-E2N battery grip for my camera along with 5 sterlingtek batteries and 24gigs of 4gb CF cards. Hopefully I will finally be done buying crap for a while, but I'm sure I'll find something. Only other thing I can think of is a nice neck strap for carting the camera around on.

Edit: And the Canon TC80N3 Timer Remote Control as well.
 
Why did you get so many CF cards? Try something like a Hyperdrive SPACE or something for extended trips out into the field.

And you'll be buying more. I guarantee it.

Is this for a Himalayan trip or something?

Not sure why else you would need 6 batteries and 24GB of memory on hand.

LOL, did you know I was going to Nepal? I'm headed to Nepal from March 21-April 17th for a 200 mile hike through the Himilayas 🙂

It's a portable laptop hard drive + media card reader all in one. Depending on the card speed, it can transfer up to 120GB of data on a single charge, and takes 2-3 minutes to transfer a 2GB card.

The newer one is the COLORSPACE with the color screen. I have the older one which is just the SPACE with a black and blue screen. This thing has saved my butt so many times it's not funny.

I bought the case only and plopped a 60GB HDD into it I had lying around. I use four 2GB cards, one card in each camera body. When one card fills up, I replace it with an empty one and dump the contents of the full one into the Hyperdrive at the same time. This way, I always have an empty card or a card that I can format.

It's good to get something like this regardless because it's a good backup solution. Even if you store your images on your CF cards, it's always a good idea to create backups onto something like the SPACE. Get a SPACE, a HDD, and two batteries and you should be set for a long time. It even has an adapter for use with AA batteries.

Yeah, it is kinda expensive, but well worth it if it means you don't have to go back and start deleting pictures because your memory cards are getting close to full.
 
definitely expensive hobby, just picked up a tamron 28-75 and planning on getting a sigma 100-300 after my tax refund comes (have to try and see if i am upto holding such a big lens for an extended period of time)
 
Drum scanner for film; $40,000. Ok, $10,000 for a Flextight.

Mini-lab for film (film processing / and paper processing)......try $100,000+.

Commercial film processors, E-6 or C-41, $$$$ 10k - 50k. Doesn't include start up chems, densitometer for running control strips, buying off the local DNR so you can dump bleach down the drain, etc.

Cost to aquire an image with my 10D and and load it into PS to edit - free 😎
 
Could be worse...

I pulled my Maxxum 7 out for the holidays to play with film a little and the end result of handling that camera again and remembering what that style felt like is that I now have an A700 sitting at home. At least I can sell the A100 and get some money out of it, but still.

Enjoy Nepal though! Sounds like a blast and you have an excellent setup for taking photos on the trip. 🙂

One downside is your putting all your eggs in one basket. For me I would rather lose a 4gb card that a 120GB hyperdrive. I know chances are slim... but they still exist.

i'm jealous of the money spent on equipment, and on your trip

are you a lotto winner or something?

I don't like the hyperdrive either just because it's not solid state media.

But yes, it's expensive. I'm trying not to spend any money this year... haha. I upgraded to a 20D and broke even selling off the package it came in. But I want a 70-200 something. and a film scanner 🙁

I'm jealous -- I won't be able to afford the A700 for awhile yet. I'm getting the new 75-300G after it comes out, assuming that the reviews are favorable. Then I want to get the Zeiss 16-80 and take the A700 with them to China in a couple years. 🙂

LOL, no lotto wins at all. I wanted to do something nice for myself hence the trip and camera to record the memories. I recently got a new job with a 45% raise and nice signing bonus. I was going to get a new car or a camera, and I chose camera.

Everything is on a 0% interest credit card till its due in Sept 08. I drive a 1991 buick beater with no car payment. I'm also single and not currently dating so that also saves money. Sacrifices are made in other areas to afford a nice trip and camera 🙂

As far as photos go, I haven't played with this thing as much as I should have, but let me dig up a couple of pics that I've taken. Lots to learn yet and I do have a couple of different events in the next couple of weeks I'm going to try and photograph.

I dunno...the latest Calumet catalog had the new Noritsu digital minilab (inkjet though) for only $20K!! That's a super hot deal. Imagine how much money you could save over $0.19 prints at Walmart after your recoup your original expense. You'd only need to print like a million prints...

I agree! I have a few wallets of CF cards, no regrets. Go SanDisk, baby! 😀 Seriously, I could never EVER delete a memory card on site without it being on a RAID setup here at home.

(for anyone interested, SanDisk Extreme III 4GB cards can be had for roughly $35 each after a MIR when you buy 2 of that particular card at B&H)

Photography is hella expensive! I just purchased a 1D-Mark III last week and a 300 f/2.8L IS late last fall. Yowza! 😀
