On Sunday, I get an order in for a custom system. The turd goes through and selects every one of the most expensive options, bringing it up to about $2500. Then picks Next Day Air as the shipping method.

Beyond the fact that nobody pays picks next day on a 100 lb. order ($240 shipping), the billing address he provides with the card is in Illinois, the shipping address is in California, the telephone number he plugs in is some auto body shop in Lousiana.

I nuked the order and, fortunately the real cardholder was listed with directory assistance, so the card is now cancelled and no harm.

But, this craphead gets even stupider. Today, he sends me a follow-up eMail asking about the status of his order!

Now, I have to ask. Are there actually vendors that fall for this crap?

Russ, if a merchant did actually process this order, and the *real* card holder canceled the card and refused to pay the charges, does the merchant have to pick up the tab?

There must be otherwise people wouldn't try it. And to think, there are more stupid people than smart ones. :)

that's why many vendors won't ship to a address other than the billing address or an address validated by the card holder through their bank.

Ya, who gets screwed someone cards something and it goes through but the card owner disputes charges or whatever? Wouldn't it be possible to kind of do an insurance scam type deal where you "steal" your own card and buy stuff?

vi_edit,

Yes, the merchant is stuck with the financial tab. The cardholder is stuck with the headache of cleaning up the mess in his credit records, new cards, etc. The issuing bank MAKES money on the deal.

jimmygates,

I don't think it has any relationship to this forum, fraud attempts are pretty common. They're usually not quite THIS stupid, though.

was he stupid or just impatient? When you track down the user (I'm assuming you're going to do something with the email address he used), let us know what happens. I'd be interested to find out what happens.

Russ, did you see my post? I've been going thru some of that too. Slovenia and Macedonia, using credit cards from people in the US. One idiot emailed me saying I was wrong, that a friend in the US was buying the stuff as a gift for him...but he placed the order. :Q

I said, in that case, friend can order it, using their own billing and same shipping address. If they do it that way, your friend can ship it to you. Never heard from again.

Pretender,

The eMail address comes from a domain with no site, that's registered in a foreign country. The shipping address is a Mailboxes, etc. The IP number came through a web proxy.

Obviously a kid, though. The pros are much more subtle. Small amount from many different cards, normal shipping selection, phone number actually in the same state, etc.

HMM...his are about tied on the stupidity meter. Of course I don't ship out of North America, so those kind are automatic nukes.

Well, I've changed my policies. I will no longer be offering shipping outside the US or Canada.
It's scary, and I don't need the problems.
