Stupid Computer wont Shut down

for some stupid reason my computers registry was screwed so i had to re-install my OS, so i install Win98Se and now the bloody thing wont shut down whenever you tell it too...ive downloaded all the patches and updates that M$ put out on the windows update in specific to this problem and the thing still refuses to shut down....any ideas? or do i have to go buy XP now.

When you click on the shutdown button what does it do?

you can always use the on/off button on the PS.

everytime i hit the shutdown button, it goes to the blue windows is shutting down screen and then just hangs there. it doesnt even go to the "its safe to turn your computer off" prompt

Make sure you have apm type things enabled in your bios. Im not sure if there are configuration things in Windows for that. Also, when you push the powerbutton to shut it down does it say it was shut down improperly when you boot it back up?
