Stupid Cell phone question

I lost my phone and a friend gave me an old one of theirs.... They're both t-mobile compatible...
My friend said that all I need to do is put a new 'sim' card in and it will be my phone...

Is that true?

There's nothing else about the phone that identifies it as unique? Just that itty bitty plastic card under the battery?

Can I just go to t-mobile and request a new 'sim' card?

Its true. But if you've lost your phone i assume you've lost your sim card as well. You're going to need to get a new one from T-Mobile.

Do you have to pay to get another sims card? My mom lost her phone(i did) and she changed to my dad's old phone. Same number. ?????
