Stupid car question: What happened to the V4?

seems like small cars are all I-4s. What happened to the V4. I've seen pictures of it on google and it doesn't look that big. Wouldn't production and developemnt be cheaper since domestics companies have lines that produce V-6 and 8 engines anyway VS. having to have a seperate line to produce I-4s?

V4 doesn't make much sense from a balance/vibration symmetry point of view.

They work fine in motorcycles. Probably not enough torque for a car. V engines are better for horsepower, I engines are better for torque.

looks like the last time they used the V4 was in the 70s. and then according to a page I found from google it got phased out because of the v6?
