Stupid browser...html question

i would say im proficient at html but i cant figure this stuff out. i want a table to stretch the whole width of a browser. i wrote this code:

<table width=&quot;100%&quot; cellpadding=&quot;0&quot; cellspacing=&quot;0&quot; bgcolor=&quot;black&quot;>

there is still a white gap on the right side. i have viewed this through both ie 5.0 and 5.5 and i get the same result. the thing is, i will look at other web pages with tables that have width set to 100% and they actually stretch the whole browser. anyone know any quirks why this would be happening and how i can fix it?
