Stupid Best Buy Applications

Alright....

what does it take to pass the freakin' 50 questions at the end of the test? They're so situational, particularly depending on the position you're applying for. I'm not a person who lacks morals or anything, so I feel like I answered the questions honestly and I feel like I answered the questions appropriately. Yet no dice... I called today and they said that I would have to re-apply and answer the questions again, Best Buy wants particular questions answered a particular way.

I'm dying for a job and this one is close by for a college kid... any suggestions? anyone work for best buy? anyone who can help?

----------UPDATE:------------

I was back home for Thanksgiving break and I recieved a phone call from Best Buy while riding with my girlfriend. They asked me a few questions and wanted to know if I could set up an interview time for this friday Dec. 1st at 12:30pm!

Thanks for all the help guys and gals! hopefully I'll do well enough in the interview to actually get the job, it'll probably be easier than the actual application process itself.

I knew a guy in high school that applied, and was rejected, from Winn Dixie (grocery chain) at least 3 times due to this answers to the question list they give. Apparently, one of the questions was whether or not he would take food from the shelves without paying for it, or something along those lines. All three times, he answered in the affirmative.

Sad, but true.

Yup. I applied at Walmart and answered honestly. They grilled me about my responses because they were not what they expected, yet agreed that my view was the correct one.

Also be consistant... sometimes consistancy is more important than the actual answers. That's why they ask the same question several times over using different language.

The ones at CircuitCity ask you if you:
1. Do drugs
2. Who you buy your drugs from
3. If you sell drugs
4. Have you stolen
5. Were you ever caught stealing
6. Do you do drugs
7. Do you pirate music or movies
8. Do you do drugs
9. Have you ever broken the law
Or at least they used to

see, but that's the problem, they ask the questions like it's a new york state regents exam or something... it's so standarized that they overcomplicate the answers to them. I don't claim to be dumb or anything, but they give you like a yes or no question and your answer choices are:

Strongly agree
agree
Neutral
disagree
Strongly Disagree

what are you suppose to say????

you know? I guess I'll just answer with the company's best interest in mind. What is annoying is that I'd partially be lying because many of the questions are circumstantial.
Here's one of the questions I remember:

you like talking to people.

Strongly agree
agree
Neutral
disagree
Strongly disagree

...first off... are they setting me up for failure? if you mean I like talking to my co-workers , who doesn't? or are you asking if I'm sociable with new people (aka - customers)?

...they're just Odd.

I had a similar application (grocery store), and I missed out by a couple of points on the questions, but I was asked to come back in so I could change my answers and get a high enough score, and then they gave me a job.
I answered honestly first time. I would say give them the answers they want to hear.

I have. The questions are customer based so when it asks do you like talking to people, it is referring to the customers. Consistency is the key to the questions. For example, if you answered "strongly agree" to the do you like talking to people question and then answer "strongly disagree" to "I consider myself a sociable person", then it doesnt look good

Answer what THEY want to hear. "Would you turn in a relative you caught stealing?" Well, realistically, no. But tell them yes.

Great! you understand my confusion!

good tips... I didn't know they specifically were referring to customers... or in general... or co-workers...

Thanks a bunch!

FoBot - Circuit city is for those who can't get into best buy... that's why CC sucks...

A few pointers for those questions like that

1. Always say what they want to hear ( its been posted by others before, but its important)
2. Always either do strongly agree, or strongly disagree. Never do neutral or slightly agree/disagree.
3. they will ask you the same questions, but in different terms. Try to remember what you answered before, and stick with that.

Its really not that tough to answer those questions, its just tedious. Even though you will lie on either part or most of the questions, its just to get your foot in the door.

The best way to get a job with BB is to get an employree referral. I answered the questions, didnt get a call back. A month later, I got an employee referral, answered the exact same questions the same way, and got the job.

My friends, I suggest you all read this: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory
to learn about the origin of all such test.

They are giving you a personality test. A test that was originally designed to diagnose crazy people.

They are looking for a certain personality type to fill their job position. They're not looking for skills but personality. And someone that doesn't steal.

Unless some questions use reverse psychology.

Well, the thing is, you have to be proactive and call them, just like you would after applying at any job. Which is how I found out that they didn't get my application at all... same thing probably happened to you.

I worked at Best Buy for 2ish years, and applied through http://www.bestbuyretailjobscanada.com/ . So I did the same standardized test you did. There's a couple of criteria you're tested on.

One, the obvious honesty and truthfulness.

Two, are you consistent in your replies - you'll notice a few key questions get repeated. This is done because what trips up people who lie the most is, well, keeping track of one's lies is hard.

Three, concrete beliefs. Say you're going to say with confidence, even if it's an apologetic "I don't know, but let me lead you over to Gary here who worked with Product X outside of Best Buy who might know what you're after."

When you do it, be motivated, but don't be too ambitious. Yes, I took it twice to learn that. I had a friend who passed, they hired him, then discovered they lost the test so they made him retake...it took him and 6, yes SIX, times for him to pass again.

Application test was a joke. Passed with a 98. They don't really ever tell you your score, but my sup. told me one day, but only because one of the new hires got a 99, lol.
