so last week i had to go into work in the middie of the night for a system issue. as i am leaving the office is see a cop pull out of our parking lot and he sees me and guns his engine and whips his cruiser back into our parking lot and i know he is coming for me. he stops his car few spots from mine. so im thinking wtf! im not robbing the place i have my badge hanging from my neck.... he gets out of his cruiser and approaches me and ask me how long i have been here. i tell him about 25-30 min. he then ask me if i saw anything unusual or any uhaul trucks. ummm no been in the server room. i ask why and he says somebody tried to steal the ATM at the bank across the street. lol

I'm thinking he figured once he tore it off the wall, there'd be a big opening where you could see the cash, and thus just grab it out of the ATM.

its a free standing ATM, one of those really big ones with the new colored touch screens. it was in the last lane of a 3 bay drive through. also i guess he didnt count on the ATM taking pictures.... like the ones the cops released. Bwhahahahah

That is stupid. According to some TV show I saw last week, you can buy used ATM machines online and then rig them and install them somewhere yourself since the sale and use of them is not regulated. I would think it would be much easier to buy one and rip off the people that use it rather than going to the trouble of renting a u-haul and getting friends and whatever to steal one.

I try not to use unknown ATMs in untrusted locations for this reason. While it might be configured to give me money if I withdraw it, it might also be designed to get my account # along with my PIN.

I never use non-bank ATMs, if your bank doesn't have ATMs either think ahead or throw $200 in a crappy checking account at a bank that does.

I used to work for IBM in the ATM call centre for Co-operative and Lloyds banks.

I remember that a group of thieves stole an ATM, by hot-wiring a JCB from a local construction site, driving it through the wall and up-ending the ATM into the bucket. They got nicked by the police down the road; JCBs aren't the fastest getaway vehicles.

lol at least they were thinking, "gee i wonder how heavy a ATM is, maybe we need a big ass digger to rip the bank wall down and crush the ATM to open it."
