Stupid accident :(

I had exam today, so I drove over to the local university over here where I take remote classes, and then in the parking lot I passed a spot that I wanted to park at, and then tried to back up, but didn't look to see behind me, and bam, there was someone there 🙁. My tint in the back is kinda blurry, and it was dark, so not sure if I didn't see or didn't look. I think I started moving while I was turning my head, and by the time I turned it all the way, it was too late. Not sure if he was moving or not. Anyways, no damage to my car, but the guy had a 92 240sx, where the hood kinda slopes into the bumper, so the hood was bent out of place. Anyways, I was in a hurry to my exam, so we exchanged info, and off I went.
I was thinking about calling the guy and offering to pay for the repair out of pocket, but before I got out of the exam, he called my insurance and filed a claim. The insurance agent called me today.
Man, I am so pissed now. I had the exam on my mind the whole morning, and wasn't paying attention. I thought it was gonna ruin my concentration for the exam too, but at least that didn't happen.
Now my insurance is going to go up over this stupid thing. It probably would have cost me 300 bucks to repair his car, but now I'll be paying a lot more in premiums.
Does it matter for insurance premiums if I totaled his car or if it was a fender bender? Is it going to go up the same? Do they just look at the points?

Probably would have cost a lot more than $300.

That's what you have insurance for, be more careful in the future.

Viper GTS

OK, a 92 240sx hood, will cost more than $300. the hood by itself from nissan will be about $500 or so. But if the dude is smart, he'll go get one at a junk yard and have it painted. prob cost about $200 for the hood, and maybe another $200 to paint it to match his car.

The hood wasn't damaged that much. Just bent a couple degrees at one point.
I think it wouldn't be too hard to pop it back into shape, but I am not expert on that.
Anyways, too late now, since he already filed a claim.

Why is it insurance if you are afraid to use it because they will up your premiums. You end up paying more in the long run than you would if you had paid out of pocket?

Sucks dude.
Maybe you should have asked him to hold off on filing a claim until you spoke with him.
Of course that would have require some mind-reading ability...

I just got off the phone with my insurance agent an hour ago. My 19 yo daughter had an accident last year and they paid out $4900. Her coverage went from $1900 to $4200. She didn't even get a ticket for the accident. I just did an online quote with another company and they only want $3500.

Get ready to pay out when you renew.

I think he was a little pissed cus I didn't admit fault right there.
He was afraid that it would look like he hit me from the back.
It says on the card not to admit fault, so I didn't. When the rep from my company called and asked me what happened, I told it like it was, and he said I was at fault, which I didn't object to.
I should have offerred to pay out of pocket, but whatcha gonna do. I was on my way to take an exam, and it slipped my mind.

They take back the money they pay out to you with higher premiums.
I hate Insurance companies because they $uck and are way overpriced.

Do I need to report this to the DMV, or does the insurance company do it.
It says in CA law that I have to report if the damage is over $750. I don't know what the damage is.

If you were backing up and he was driving straight, would it be split faults?
I am not sure if he was driving straight or stopped before I hit him. The insurance agent (my company) asked me that, and I said that.
For me to know if he was moving, would mean that I had to see him, but if I saw him, I wouldn't have hit him 🙂

You didn't see him because he was driving... 😉

Yeah, something like that.
Apparently, In CA, one or less points is still "Safe Driver", so this is my first point. Of course the insurance company might still stick it to me.

you should of just said, he rear ended you j/k

it's not just the hood, there's also Frame work, fenders, paint, his medical check ups, body injuries, etc.

Just think, if a small bump with a inch of paint off could cost the Insurence Co. from $600-$2000 dollars, a damage hood could cost them alot more if the other guys planing to scam them,, example, his cars frame is damge but has no record, you hit his car, when the shop check his car, it would be like you damage his frame., Frame damage? repair cost sky rocket to over $1500 at least,. then parts, paint etc.. then he can't go to work because of the medical check up etc,. All of those things can add up.

So your insurence rate will mostly go up depending on how much your insurence will be paying him.

That's what I was thinking.
But it didn't look like it was totaled. But you never know. Just noticed my bumper is a little deformed now. The cover looks normal. But if I press on it on one side, it's firm, but on the other side, it pushes in maybe quarter of an inch. Not gonna repair it though, cus I got 1000 deductable, and it drives fine, and looks fine.
