Hi, This probably sound like a really stupid question, but whats the fastest P3 my mobo will support? I brought home a P3 from work and the guys said it should be a 600 or 667 and it came up as a 333 on my machine. Is that because this motherboard can't support a p3 667?

thanks

u need to update the bios first, the set the cpu speed manually to 133mhz system bus speed. and set the cpu multiplier to 5x. good luck.

I did flash the new bios.
would I be overclocking with those settings?
thx btw

I think Ultra is right...

333 divided by 66mhz = 5 (multiplier)

check your bios, when system is booting at 333, FSB should = 66, and Multiplier should = 5

I bet you system is booting at 66 mhz, celeron style...lol

If this is true, then 5 is the multiplier, and the CPU is a 667, like Ultra says, just change FSB to 133..

Just trying to remember if this board has AGP & PCI setting for 133, I'm not sure.. if it doesn't then you'll be overclocking both of those bus's also... if no 133 setting, the AGP Bus = 2/3 133 = 87; the PCI Bus = 1/3 133 = 43.... if your AGP video can run at 87, and your PCI devices can run at 43 you'll be OK

I beleive the highest multiplier originaly supported on that M/B was 8X, but I bet it will go higher

PS: That's one of the fastest and most stable M/B's ever built, with a slotkey and a Coppermine CPU it's still one of the best ever... don't trade it in too soon, I sold mine and replaced it with a SE6, what a mistake..

The highest multiplier for the bx6-2 is 9x with the newest bios update. I'm running my celeron 600@900 by 9x100. Pretty stable

coppermines are the flip chips? This P3 is slot1, thanks for the help by the way.
Where do you change the FSB settings?
I should keep the voltage setting at default?

@133mhz the agp is 89mhz and the pci is 33mhz.

try default voltage and see if it is stable, if not try to increase one step. keep testing until u find stable setting, but try not to go too high.

all settings are in the bios screen. just look around in soft cpu setup.

good luck.

so I don't need any special cooling? the chip is still in the plastic case with a retail fan, I think. The multiplier doesn't have 5, but a 5.5 setting. What is the default voltage for a P3 667? Thats what this chip is supposed to be.

thanks a lot, I thought this thread was gonesville.

If it is a slot1, then let us know what the numbers are along the top edge of the CPU, it doesn't matter what you set the multiplier to because you can't change it ( unless you happen to have one that is unlocked ). Do you have the "QR" Bios, that is the latest bios from I think last May.

Many of those motherboards with the FSB control feature in the BIOS initially boot up with 66Mhz FSB as default Safe Mode when you change CPUs. This is the feature which helps you when you up FSB way too much to the point that system does not even boot up. When this happens, you can boot up the system using this feature by clearing the CMOS or pressing Insert or else.

Because you just install the new CPU, this feature just kicked in. You need to go into the BIOS to change the FSB to the correct setting.
