I am new to networking, so new I know nothing ( I have read the FAQ's and they haven't helped). I bought a network kit for my 2 PC's and thought networking them would be a breeze as they both run the same OS (WinME). Here is my scenario:

PC 1

Accton EN1207D Ethernet 10/100 connected to cable modem
Realtek RTL8139 " " connected to like card by crossover cable in PC 2
Norton Internet Security on both PC's

I tried the instructions in the network kit book but got no joy and also via the networking wizard and again no luck.
I have gone up the TCP/IP route giving them IP addresses and also NetBEUI but no matter what I can't ping the other machine. They are both named differently but have the same workgroup name. If someone could do me a "hold your hand" guide to try to get my two machines to talk I would be most appreciative.

Thankyou in advance from an extremely frustrated non-networking tired and thirsty old man

First make sure that your hardware is installed correctly, could be that you have a? Ghost? network installation. Take out the NIC, reboot, delete the entire network setting, look at the Control Panel, System Properties, and delete any Network hardware. Switch off reinstall the NIC, and the rest of the Network.

May be the content of the following links will help:

Basic LAN Setup.

Setting Up, Windows 98 / 98-SE.

Are you using a Router or hub that you plug each computer into or are you running one wire from PC1 NIC to PC2 NIC? If this is the case then you need a crossover cable.

Edit: I really need to read more carefully. Sorry.

Trun off Norton Internet Security, this sould solve your problems. If you really need it, (I have not used it) but try to only have it monitoring the ethernet card that conncts to your cable modem.
