i was googling "Dragon Age Awakening" when i stumbled upon this little game.

Defense Grid: The Awakening (screens: http://defensegrid.hiddenpath.com/view/content/image)
looks nice, originally a console game (the site says its very popular downloadable game for consoles) and now its for the PC as well.

has anyone played this? is it worth the investment?

EDIT: didnt see there's a demo...i'll get it when i get home.

Hello newb!
Welcome to 1 year ago!

Seriously though, we all know about this game and have been enjoying it for some time.

I'll second that this is a great game. They just released a free DLC pack that is quite short but has four very good maps.

For a newish player to TD, I recommend trying to play through the challenge version of a map directly after you beat the normal version of the map. That will help you a lot with overall strategy that will in turn make the normal versions of later maps easier, and some of the modes like Practice Mode or the spending limit ones where you get the cash up front really help for developing strategies as well.

I have just picked up Sol Survivor from Steam... after my longstanding passion with Plants Vs. Zombies and Defense Grid: The Awakening.

Graphically I cannot compare it as I am running it on my Atom/ION mini-ITX build but as a Tower Defense game goes it is quite enjoyable.

It rather guides you in with a good tutorial and releases new towers at a nice rate. It also introduces the idea of 'characters', where each character has access to a limited set of turret designs and 'support powers' which are a nice touch, resembling the orbital laser array you had access to in Defense Grid: The Awakening.

Also, if you are using Windows XP and have an ATI card, you will have some serious slowdown issues with newer versions of the Catalyst drivers. Supposedly only version 9.4 is good.
No one can fucking figure it out.

So how long before we see reverse tower defense? where you to pick the units to overcome a predesigned setup? I should get cranking on this and get it in stores first.

They have a type of that for WC3 mod..but its tower defense as well as sending troops toward your opponent. picking the type..

Spend your gold to build troop factories that produce 1 troop per 10 seconds...upgrade them...build bigger type of heavy troop factories..etc

There are several flash games like this. I have not seen a standalone game with such a system.

Challenge version? Is that only with the DLC pack because I don't recall seeing that option after finishing a map.

Thanks a bunch for the tip! I'll give it a whirl.

Plants vs. Zombies has this mode (titled I Zombie).

When you select a map in either the original game or the DLC, the first option that highlights is Story. Once you beat it, there's a Story Challenge button directly below it that lets you play the map again with tougher mobs. Additionally, most of the maps have lots of other modes like Grinder, Practice, Poison Core, etc.

Picked up Defense Grid during one of those Steam sales. Beat it and enjoyed it a lot.

If you guys are serious about playing TD games, pick up Warcraft 3, it has several thousand of the best TD's ever created.
