any advantages installing Directx 8.0?
seems a waste if i don't install it but even worse if it will crash my computer.

Why the f&%* are you installing leaked drivers? It is one thing to install driver provided by 3dfx which they post on their website as beta since they feel confident enough to release it. But I would never install leaked NVIDIA drivers. Especially 7.17. They have timing problems which can damage your monitor.

actually pidge, nvidia stays on top of their driver updates more than anyone else. if a problem arises, they fix it. quickly, unlike others. that's why so many "leaked" drivers are released. betas are betas. confidence has nothing to do with posting the betas. and the 7.17s are the only ones that have serious compatibility problems, and that's when combined with directx8.

...to make room for a new host of problems.

Heh....sounds like M$ and their NT4 "service packs"

I am just saying, don't download leaked drivers. It is really stupid. I can't stand sites that focus on providing leaked drivers to end users. They think they are being cool and all but are only hurting a companies reputation and are helping to spread drivers that can cause damage to a persons setup or hardware (ie in the case of the 7.17 drivers, the monitor). Sorry. It was mostly a rant. I just hate seeing posts all the time about problems with driver x.xx when it isn't a released driver. Also, working for Intel for a while made me hate employees who release NDA information against their own company. I have no respect for anyone who wishes to do harm to their own company unless that have a reason to be upset with their company in which case they should just quit a move on.

you are making a very good point pidge except

nvidia "leaks" their drivers purposely.

If you think that a huge corporation like nvidia, full of technologically advanced IP honestly has *THAT* much of a problem with "leaks", then...well, i have some oceanfront property in Kansas to sell you

RoboTECH - :)

well, one of those "leaked" fixed my winme/kt7 problems. go figure. pidge, i have a question for you. what better way to check the stability of the drivers than to "leak" them out and have users try them out at their own risk? no one company can test all possible setups, and by "leaking" the drivers they are getting free testing and useful feedback. even micro$oft knows that. that's why they release betas for testing. since most "big" companies buy standardized computers, which are pre-configured to have little compatibility problems, in-house testing can reveal some but not all problems. releasing the software to people that have randomly configured computers with generic parts tends to reveal additional problems.

i don't think that coolness has THAT much to do with it. "leaked" drivers are kind of like overclocking and tweaking: you hope to get a little bit more than you paid for. it's nice to get a new version that runs a little bit better than the one before it. besides, playing around is fun. even if their is risk involved.

IMHO

Just to add my two cents, I have a GeForce SDR, KT7 motherboard, and DirectX 8. I can't get 3D games to work with ANY of the Nvidia drivers...

Faye, let me know if you ever got anything working with your setup...
