stuffing: boxed or from scratch?

so, I've been tasked with making the stuffing for Thanksgiving this year... I'm wondering, is it worth making from scratch or should I just pickup a box of Stove Top?

I've never made it before and my mom always just goes the boxed route for Thanksgiving 🙁

99% of things I would say from scratch is better but honestly stuffing is always MUCH worse when I've had it fresh made.

Just something about that stove top taste that I can't get enough of. I don't need any weird themes or spices or veggies in my stuffing!

Aren't you experienced in the ways of the culinary arts? No excuse not to make it yourself imo.

(Not that I've ever made it or ever tried pre-made stuffing before)

one of the good boxed stuffings made with fresh veggies IMO. I'm a big fan of the cornbread types.

I don't really enjoy the saucepan made ones though (like stovetop)

Mrs. Cubbins, yo! And if you make it right you'll add enough shit to it it won't matter it came from a box. Add sauteed celery, onions and mushrooms, water chestnuts and dried sour cherries, white wine, orange juice and chicken stock until sufficiently moist, bake, profit!

depends how much work you want to do. A few twists on stovetop will give you added flavor notes if you want. For example, you could use sherry, and for the stock, boil the neck, gizzards, etc. Or add in some slivered, toasted almonds and dried cranberries. Or line the inside cavity with a few bay leaves before stuffing so they perfume the bread.

Where making stuffing completely from scratch works better is if you want to go full on custom, like doing cornbread, or doing an oyster stuffing.

I'd like to think that I'm a good cook, but there are some things that people just prefer from a box or a can (for example, canned pumpkin vs processing your own from scratch) which is why I figured I'd ask

I like boxed. I've had superior scratch made, but they've been the exceptions. Box is predictable and good, if not exceptional.

cubbbbbins cornbread.

Boxed works in a pinch. The only time I get homemade stuffing is turkey day. Mmm...sourdough stuffing.

Maybe it's the type of stuffing we make at home but I hate boxed stuffing. I'm normally against the "make it from scratch" crowd because I'm lazy but stuffing is an exception.

My grandmother makes in-the-bird stuffing, and I have to admit that I've always preferred Stove Top to my grandmother's stuffing... just don't tell her that! :$ However, you have to make your own mashed potatoes. That flake junk just isn't the same!

One can take a box mix; doctor it up slightly and stuff the bird with it.

That is exactly what my mom used to do and it was great.

I have to say, I'm surprised at the responses in this thread. I thought this would degenerate into a typical ATOT food snobbery thread and everyone would be screaming "scratch made!"

I grew up with Stove Top.. I like it.

Now I get stuck with my mother-in-law's homemade sage stuffing.... I tried it... I don't like it. The rest of my wife's family loves it though.

I think those are the only two kinds I've had. lol

LOL, yea, I thought that was going to happen too, I use stove top with a finely diced apple and a few tablespoons of maple syrup then cooked in-the-bird only!..

Scratch made stuffing can be a pretty involved process.
I prefer the recipe my mom has to say my dads recipe...My moms recipe would destroy boxed stuffing, my dads not so much.
Not to surprising my dads recipe and the boxed stuffing are far easier to make.

To enhance the box stuffing; get a bag of croutons(comes in different styles) and mix it with the box stuffing. Add in any diced fruits/veggies you want.

Scratch ONLY...The only part of our stuffing that MIGHT not be scratch made is the dried bread cubes. SOMETIMES she'll buy those...but usually starts drying out bread a few months in advance.

Homemade is so freaking easy and tastes so much better. You have to go scratch.
