Black licorice can cause heart arrhythmias.

If you have a sweet tooth, Halloween may be one of your favorite holidays. But if you’re 40 years old or older, make sure that you don't go overboard with black licorice. Right before Halloween in 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned that eating two ounces of black licorice every day, for at least two weeks straight, can cause irregular heart rhythms. The danger of arrhythmia comes from a compound called glycyrrhizin, a sweetening compound found in licorice root.

Love licorice? There's a twist:

  • Glycyrrhizin can cause potassium levels in the body to fall. In addition to abnormal heart function, it can cause high blood pressure, swelling, muscle weakness, and congestive heart failure.
  • Licorice is a low-growing shrub found mostly in Greece, Turkey, and Asia. The plant’s root has a long history of use as a folk remedy.
  • Licorice has been used as a treatment for heartburn, ulcers, bronchitis, sore throat, coughs, and some infections, but there’s no scientific evidence confirming its effectiveness.

I read about that on Facebook and my take away was that if you're consuming that much black licorice, you have bigger problems. That shit is disgusting!

The Third Pacific Fleet amassing in Ulithi for invasion of Japan in 1945

The invasion force, involving the Third, Fifth, and Seventh Fleets and the British Pacific fleet, was to have included at least 42 aircraft carriers, 24 battleships, and over 400 destroyers and destroyer escorts. Fourteen US "division-equivalents" (13 divisions and two regimental combat teams) were scheduled to take part in the initial landings.

Old news but sort of funny.

The government has an official plan for fighting zombies.

The U.S. government is not really expecting a zombie apocalypse, but the Pentagon is still prepared for that unlikely event. In 2014, it was learned that the U.S. Department of Defense has a well-thought-out strategy for fighting those frightening fictional foes, known as the Counter-Zombie Dominance Plan, or CONPLAN 8888-11 in government-speak, which states: “This plan was not actually designed as a joke.” In essence, the process of designing a contingency plan for handling zombie attacks encouraged disaster planners to think outside the box when it comes to creative strategies and tactics.

Not just a movie:

  • CONPLAN 8888-11 laid out a 31-page strategy in three parts, designed to defeat marauding brain-eating predators and restore law and order.
  • The first zombie tales date back to 17th-century Haiti, where zombies were believed to be African slaves who had committed suicide but were unable to "pass on."
  • Stories of the undead first caught on in the United States after the release of the 1968 film The Night of the Living Dead.

Paint that cools whatever surface it's on.

https://www.newscientist.com/articl...ns-the-sun-into-the-ultimate-air-conditioner/

The technology is based on the counterintuitive principle of laser cooling – using laser light to cool specially designed materials by up to 150°C. It works because molecules in these materials absorb photons while spontaneously emitting higher-energy photons. Since this loses energy overall, the temperature falls.

Mounting lasers on your roof wouldn’t be very practical, though, so Shenhav wanted to make the material work with sunlight. The problem was that the sun’s spectrum is much broader than that of a laser’s narrow range of frequencies.

The paint the team came up with has an outer layer that filters out some of the sun’s rays and an inner one that absorbs heat and emits higher-frequency light, cooling itself below the ambient temperature.

Spocks full name is S'Chn T'Gai Spock.
His fathers name is S'Chn T'Gai Sarek.

Both are direct descendants of Surak, considered to be the founder of modern Vulcan logic and sort of a messiah.
