What the hell happened to feminism?

To me it always meant:
Not having the fact that you were a female used against you in any way. For example, if a woman did a good job she should get the same financial rewards as the next man OR if she screwed something up she should get ripped the same size anal orifice as the next guy.

It meant that women had CHOICES.. she could be an at home Mum or a Business woman and both were valued and productive.

It meant that she may be your wife but dont think she is your possesion to beat the crap out of whenever you feel like it.

I am all for a work place where I can bend over and pick up my pen without having to worry if some sleaze is going to pinch my arse.
I am against women wearing low cut tops or 'sexy' clothes in the work environment and then complaining because some guy looked at her cleavage.

I hate the automatic assumption that when a woman makes a sexual harassment complaint its assumed that she is telling the truth by the powers that be and the guy is a sleaze, hello...some women DO lie, just as who a woman slept with last week has no bearing on whether some dick had the right to rape her last night.

It sucks to be told that I am not considered capable of doing a job because I have breasts..
But listen up Mr Interviewer, my ovaries hang low and I can swing them as well as any man can swing his balls and I will prove it if you give me the job.

BUT what really gets up my freakin nose is that women can get away with not completing their work to a reasonable standard and then the 'men' involved in the meeting spend a hour or more 'getting her to speed' after she gets upset and does a wee woe is me act with a few tears thrown in for good measure
Hell if she can't keep up fire her arse.

I see this all too often and every time a coconut these women get away with it.

Is this because men have an in built need to 'take care' of what they see as the weaker sex or are they just so freakin scared to rip her a new one incase they get hauled before HR?

I dont want my bra back but this new breed of 'I want my cake and eat it too female' is someone I want to slap silly.

as opposed to....? Personally, I agree with your view that equal is equal, taking the good with the bad. Most women I know believe this as well.

I am fortunate not to have seen happen these things you describe. Besides, what does a coconut have to do with it? :p

What you described is women (and men) who are still conforming to the gender roles that were imposed on them from the day they were born. Half of them don't know any better. They were brought up in a society of "Barbie is for girls and GI Joe is for boys" but then as they became more and more educated, they picked up some of the basic tenets of feminism, but they are too attached to their roles to fully embrace their new knowledge.
Which leads to the "have your cake and eat it to" phenomenon.

klee58 - unfortunately after spending 18 years working in what were traditionally male work environments I have seen too many women bring on the tears or bat the eyelashes and get away with not getting their work done because of it...

LMAO -I am getting too cynical in my old age.... and I think perhaps the pendulum needs to settle in the middle ground.

Ok, I changed the 'old school'.... it is what it is... :)

I should also add that I have nothing but admiration for most of the women who post at ATOT, they all seem to be strong and independent no BS women.

Now as for the coconuts... its a Kiwi saying I guess, I never really thought about it. ;)

Bunker - I agree.

Lord Maul - haha, straight male huh? perhaps thats the answer to my problem... I will book an operation ASAP.

Hi Kassy!

Yup, yup, and yup... add what you described and throw in a bit of the 'old boys network' and you have why I prefer to work with animals and children. I'll clean kennels or change diapers before I'll put up with the crap of office politics.

BTW...

I've spent most of my life working in fields that were predominately male and have never had many problems, either with guys or with my ability to do the job I've been paid to do. I dunno, maybe I'm just weird :)

Hey ISLA !! Every time a coconut = without fail (haha, hey leave my fanny outta this, it means something totally different in NZ and we arent that close...yet ;) )

Baffled - you dont strike me as the type to bring on the tears or bat your eyelashes to get special treatment in the work place.... you seem to be the type that can give as good as she gets and do the job as well as the next person..

Jzero - Good point, makes sense... but its certainly not something that should be encouraged or ignored.

It definitely should not be encouraged or ignored, but it's one of those things that's hard to change. Reaction to race and gender issues is so deeply engrained in us by our upbringings. My great-grandparents wouldn't have let a non-white person in their house. My grandparents would have let a non-white person in their house if it was absolutely necessary. My parents would be friends with non-white people, but would never accept me dating/marrying anyone of color. I couldn't care less what color anyone's skin is.

Likewise, with each passing generation, more parents are conciously avoiding "gendering" their children and pigeonholing them to a lifestyle of snivel and tears or brawn and bravado. Instead, they are more apt to let a child develop as s/he chooses. Awareness is necessary for each new generation to not make the mistakes of the old ones, but unfortuantely, no amount of education and demonstration will alter the actions of someone who has been shaped to act in such a way for a lifetime.
