Cliffs:
? Exercise builds new brain cells in a region linked with memory and memory loss
? Mice grew new cells in area known to be affected in age-related memory decline
? MRIs showed similar cell growth in human brains after exercise

Sweet! Now that's even more incentive for me to work out. I work out 7 days a week. That includes going to the gym 5 days a week for at least an hour, but I also surf or play football and basketball down in Laguna beach 4 days out of the week. Gotta love my six-pack! :]

I get a lot of exercise at work, walking / running around and doing heavy lifting (I work at a large server farm... from the noc to the furthest room away is like 3 blocks worth of walking).

but I don't just go out and exercise on my own or at the gym too frequently... whenever I have the time, it always seems to be at odd hours (like right now, at 1 am)

Depends on your definition of Work Out. I play V-ball once a week. Go for 2.5 mile walks with my dogs every day or every other day. Go to the Y every so often... Voted once per week though.

i don't see where muscular athletic people are any dumber than the gen population, in fact, i'll venture they are above average in intelligence on the whole.

The National IQ test in the Netherlands always asks several groups of people to participate. Bodybuilders scored under average.

They scored about 20 points lower than the canabis smokers, who had just smoked canabis before the show, and also been tested prior to that. Without having used canabis they scored about 5-10 points lower than with
(Probably because of being more relaxed after smoking)

so you are saying that this study (sited by the OP) is bunk?

actually, after further investigating, it does say that aerobic activity fights brain shrinkage. those who engage in non-aerobic (stretching-and-toning training) "did not experience any change in their brains, but "the aerobic group showed a substantial increase in brain volume."

I work out 4 days a week and I'm an advanced body builder.

Yet my memory still sucks.

Based on my own biased, subjective and anecdotal evidence I call shens. :p

Body Building != Cardiac Exercise

Anaerobic Training does nothing but build muscle. Aside from physical stress, there is no effect on the body (ie Oxygen supply)

Oh really? I suppose the reductions in blood pressure and improvements in insulin sensitivity, plasma lipids, and markers of oxidative stress have nothing to do with the body or the cardiovascular system?

There are many, many studies which have demonstrated a significant improvement in VO2 max as a result of resistance training, as well as other forms of anaerobic exercise (i.e. high-intensity interval training). I can provide references if you like.

Do a heavy set of squats or sprint 50m, and tell me that you do not feel any effects on your cardiac system.

Sprinting is not Anaerobic. And while the effects of anaerobic exercise may be beneficial, I still doubt they effect the entire body as much as cardio.

In any case, that's why I enjoy rowing. Best of both worlds :)

the brain is a very subjective organ -- it can change by almost any influence (ie. real and placebo).

Playing computer games for 1 hr a day could also boost brainpower.

To some, smoking non-cigarette products helps too.

What activities, then, would you consider to be anaerobic?
