"Study" shows Walmarts in white areas are 'nicer'

By 'study' it means that Yelp reviews were analyzed to determine which stores were nicer...

Anyone with a half a brain can go into various stores (whether it is a Walmart, Target , Walgreen's/CVS or just a mom and pop store) and compare the ones in 'white' areas versus 'people of color' areas to see which ones are nicer....if you think otherwise, maybe you can tell us what the color of the sky is in your world or you should get your vision checked...

This study seems to just blame Walmart for this and nothing else....

Just another article/study to stir up the race pot....

Sounds about right. Ive seen this myself around KC. Some walmarts/targets given the area are just worse than in nicer areas.

Nah, our wal-mart is trash, and white people are made here. It just depends on the town and income basis, not so much the race. There is probably some correlation between the two, but there are definitely ones that do not fit the bill they are selling.

I lived for a year in Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia, right on the edge. Across the street was Montgomery County, and a mile or so down that street was a Pathmark supermarket. It was the nearest/only supermarket in the immediate area. The clientele was 90% plus black, but these were not ghetto blacks, these were solidly middle class blacks in intact families who were employed and owned their own homes, AND THAT STORE was a disgrace.

Now, Pathmark is by no means a high end market, but I'd shopped in several others, all of which were spacious and clean. This one was crowded and unkempt and clearly not tended to, because they could.

OP, it's not that article that's stirring up the race pot, it's real life stuff like this that reminds all too many black folk that even when they do right and climb the ladder to the middle class, they can still be served the shit end of the stick.

My local Walmart is a mess compared to one in a richer area.
Can't we just assume it's the local labor market?

1st World problem?

Excuse me, but I laugh at the claim that "My Walmart is nicer than yours".

---------------------------

Not sure what is meant by "nicer". I don't consider myself a 'Walmart aficionado', but in my (limited) experience the 'niceness' of such stores has more to do with their age and how much traffic they get. (A lot of traffic means emptied or disheveled shelves as people handle and look through the merchandise and simply more 'dirt' on the floor tracked in by so many people).

There is a Walmart about 30 minutes from me that has a sushi and wine bar....it is in a more upscale area and would bet that it is nicer than yours...definitely nicer than 2 that are about 10 minutes from me.

this factor not considered in the 'study'....

Income is considered in the study, and is shown to not correlate nearly as strongly as race.

It only takes only a handful of trashy individuals to trash up a store. A store can be 99% full of good, honest working and middle class people, but if 1% of them allow their children to crap in the carts, or take Twinkies off of the shelves and discard them half-eaten, or etc, that's more than enough to make customers describe the place as filthy. This effect can be seen in other situations too; just take a fast food place in a decent area vs one that isn't so nice. One will be clean, have open-access bathrooms, an open counter, etc. Another will be dirty, require keys to access the bathroom to prevent junkies from shooting up, bulletproof glass in front of the cashiers, etc. Ultimately it's trashy customers that ruin a place, you don't even need security or a major janitorial staff if your customers aren't at risk of stealing from you or vandalizing.

I think the lack of competition is a valid angle though, and one that isn't really considered in the study. Walmart is spread out much further and they're willing to go after markets that other superstores won't touch. It would be interesting to see if the quality was more strongly correlated with lack of competition in a given market, maybe just comparing zip codes with Targets, Costcos, etc to those where Walmart is the only major chain.

I grew up in a mostly white town and our KMart actively and purposfully ripped off customers by ringing up higher prices than were marked on the shelves.

It happens.

But the need for people to tie everything to race is just a sign that playing the victim card is highly profitable in today's society.

Walmarts seem to be bad especially in lower income areas. Even newer Walmarts in those areas have much trashier parking lots. Even the Target on Chouteau tfwy is better than most Walmarts.

A nice Walmart? I thought that was in the realm of fantasy. Not like Tolkien would write but more like George R.R. Martin...

Most stores tend to reflect their clientele. All it takes is a few customers that trash the place or are violent/rude whatever and the place starts to become a dump.

I'd be willing to bet that there's a very strong correlation to socio-economic numbers.

Of course some SJW type idiots would want to push a racist angle......

Walmart is bad and I feel bad for going into one. The lines are the longest of any store I've ever been to and when I had a question I was out of luck. No employees in the aisles, no one in customer service. I pushed the button for service and after ten minutes no one came. No savings is worth that.

yet you can't comment on the study stirring the race pot but only my opinion of it...I bet you think minorities can't be racist either...

I don't believe you established it was stirring the race pot. Your second comment is idiotic, everyone can be racist.

Beggars cannot be choosers.
The American people are struggling too hard to not "save" under a suffering of poor quality and poor service.
Sacrifices are made every hour of every day with value of labor the way it is.

The public, at large, is being exploited.

of course minorities can be racist, just like you can.

btw, does the irony of your creating this thread and stirring the race pot really go over your head?
