The results of a recent study Neanderthal DNA reveals they and humans diverged from a common ancestor about 700,000 years ago, then split into two separate groups about 300,000 years later.

In a detailed analyses, two teams of scientists separately sequenced large pieces of DNA taken from the femur of a 38,000-year-old Neanderthal specimen found in a cave 26 years ago in Croatia. One team sequenced more than 1 million base pairs of the 3.3-billion-pair genome, and the other analyzed 65,000 pairs.

The new studies confirm the Neanderthal's humanity, and show that their genomes and ours are more than 99.5 percent identical, differing by only about 3 million bases.

Hmmm, I wonder if this new discovery will be updated in the intelligent design text books?

I remember seeing another article comparing human DNA to some other, apparently unrelated animal (like frog, but I'm not sure) with a surprisingly high DNA match, well over 90% as I recall.

I also remember seeing another article that said scientists have no idea what most of our DNA does, and speculated that it may be leftover junk from prior steps on the evolution trail.

Maybe it all means that all life (on Earth, at least) must have a nearly identical same basic structure in order to survive here.

Some also think that Humans and Neanderthals interbred and that we are both Human and Neandrethal.

Are you really going to come in here, tease us with a scientific bombshell like that one, and then not deliver the goods?

Come on, I'm pretty much salivating here in anticipation of seeing the entire world of anthropology turned on its head!

The Lord almighty placed that femur bone in that cave on purpose. The Lord almighty decided to test our faith in the Lord almighty by replicating our DNA and setting up this "experiment" under his master to plan to enslave and imprison in hell all the heretics that believe this "scientific" fact which in reality is a test by the Lord.

Those that believe in this phony science will be sent to hell to burn in fire and brimstone for all of eternity for believing this evolution hoax.

Thank you and have a blessed day. God bless you.

I think all mammals have very similar DNA...mostly the same life functions and organs will do that.

Not surprised to see a close relative of the species homo sapiens be so similar in DNA structure.

Given how similar most living organisms are, a far more informative comparison would be to quantify how different they are, not how 'the same' since this number is artificially high.

For example, at 98% 'the same' or whatever chimpanzees are, we aren't even capable of interbreeding right?

So the study reveals that Neanderthals and humans are .5% different. That's still different.

I don't know about that... a few beers, and most people are 100% compatible.

And, given enough old, fermented fruit, so were Homo Whateveruses and Neanderthals.

This just in:

Further analysis has demonstrated that George W. Bush's DNA is 99.95% identical to that of Neanderthals and 100% identical to that of chimpanzees.
