Study: Free booze benefits homeless alcoholics

Newsflash:

People who want to do drugs are going to do drugs, and when they don't get their drugs they will be cranky.

Sounds like the government funded safe injection sites where addicts shoot up on whatever they want. Is it a new solution for a problem that no one's been able to solve? Yes. Is it going to solve the problem? Hah. No.

How is 15 glasses of wine a day a "small" amount?

were allowed up to 15 glasses of wine or sherry a day
Once we give a 'small amount' of alcohol and stabilize the addiction, we are able to provide health services

That's like 3 bottles of wine per person per day.

Next thing you know they will offer free prostitutes to sex addicts.

Maybe Canada will even "progress" more in the future and offer children to child molestors.

Offer people to kill to serial killers?

Give free money to bank robbers.

Where does it stop?

Clearly there are pluses and minuses. It's an interesting position to take, the spin is that they're minimizing the social impact of addicts, and of course it really is for the good that they're maintaining a relationship with the drunk and seeing them regularly to asess their other health issues. Of course ultimatley the guy is still going to drink himself to death.

I wonder at the philosophical implications though, what does it mean that the assumption of the media is that the reader is not an alcoholic and what does it mean that the benefits alluded to are primarily social? A possible reading of the subtext would be, "There's a net gain if, at the least, he's causing less trouble for the normal people"

I didn't read the original link but I can tell you that if you are an alcoholic and you are not getting alcohol you WILL die!! I am not shitting you.

To get out of alcohol addiction you need to gradually step down, not go from permanently drunk to sober over night. It will kill you.

edit:
After browsing the articles I think that is actually the thought behind this. They will provide some alcohol so the bums don't need to steal stuff to get drunk and build their trust somewhat and then (I guess) gradually reduce he amount or strength of the booze they are given ubntil the addiction (the direct medical addiction) is gone.
