Clearly there are pluses and minuses. It's an interesting position to take, the spin is that they're minimizing the social impact of addicts, and of course it really is for the good that they're maintaining a relationship with the drunk and seeing them regularly to asess their other health issues. Of course ultimatley the guy is still going to drink himself to death.
I wonder at the philosophical implications though, what does it mean that the assumption of the media is that the reader is not an alcoholic and what does it mean that the benefits alluded to are primarily social? A possible reading of the subtext would be, "There's a net gain if, at the least, he's causing less trouble for the normal people"
