Scratch that. Its down 2/3 between 3/2005 and 3/2009 from 3/2000-3/2005.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/01/AR2010090106940.html

A deep recession and tougher border enforcement have led to a sharp decline in the number of immigrants entering the United States illegally in the past five years, contributing to the first significant reversal in the growth of their numbers in two decades, according to a new report by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The number of illegal immigrants entering the United States plunged by almost two-thirds between 2005 and 2009, a dramatic shift after years of growth in the population, according to the report.

In the first half of the decade, an average of 850,000 people a year entered the United States without authorization, according to the report, released Wednesday. As the economy plunged into recession between 2007 and 2009, that number fell to 300,000.

...

Massey also pointed to a rise in guest-worker visas, from 104,000 in 2000 to 302,000 in 2009, allowing more immigrants to come to the United States legally. The other likely reasons for the decline, he said, include an increase in law enforcement and deportations, and enactment of stricter legislation against illegal immigrants.

The report also mentions that the number of illegals in the country has declined to 11.1 million in 2009 from its peak of 12 million in 2007.

Either the illegals are choosing not to enter because border enforcement was in-place, the lack of jobs, threat of deportation when caught, or all of the above.

I'd rather go to Mexico than the US....

GOP solution to illegal immigration: crash the economy.

Dmcowen674 has a twin?

What do you honestly think? It is the economy stupid. Companies like landscapers, homebuilders, etc do have anything to offer illegal immigrants at the moment.

What are illegals and the people who employ them worried about?

A drop in the number of new illegal immigrant arrivals should surprise nobody. It's a combination of a lot of things, but the main force driving it (by far) is the economy. Why would people risk their lives and face tremendous uncertainty if they can't be reasonably sure that they can make a living (and provide money to those back home) when they get here?

While those numbers are promising (if true), I would rather see the numbers go negative, where we are getting rid of the illegals.

A/ They wanted a chance to better themselves.

Obama new policy of not sending ILLEGALS back will change their attitudes as the economy picks up steam (if/when ever). But only as long as there are at least 400K CRIMINAL ILLEGALS in the system

If memory serves, illegal immigration was already on the decline as of 2007 before the economy crashed. The recession then accelerated it. So it appears that the fence building and additional personnel have had some effect.

It's mostly the economy. Also, we're basically becoming a 3rd world country so there's not much use going from one to another.

Really ? How do you document the undocumented ? And the Pew Hispanic center is a Hispanic based group...Can it get anymore biased than that. According to them we had 12 million illegals here in 2000...And 12 million illegals here today. Bullshit anyone ?

We're nowhere close to being a "third world country" at the present time. Whether or not we are somewhere in the process of becoming one is debatable, I suppose. However, Mexican immigrants aren't making projections of where the U.S. is headed. They base their migratory patterns on present economics. And even in our currently depressed state, opportunity is still much higher here than in Mexico (their unemployment rate is actually lower than ours, but underemployment much higher, and real wages much lower). In fact, a recession can even create jobs for people willing to work for lower than usual wages and get paid under the table.

Stepped up border security has undoubtedly played some role here, as has increasing deportations, which started under the previous administration and has continued under this one.
