Study: Aggressive Drivers Tend to Have Bumper Stickers

Posted: Jun. 19, 2008 11:06 a.m.

If you want a peaceful ride to work, stay away from cars with bumper stickers.

The Washington Post explains, "That's the surprising conclusion of a recent study by Colorado State University social psychologist William Szlemko. Drivers of cars with bumper stickers, window decals, personalized license plates and other 'territorial markers' not only get mad when someone cuts in their lane or is slow to respond to a changed traffic light, but they are far more likely than those who do not personalize their cars to use their vehicles to express rage -- by honking, tailgating and other aggressive behavior."

The Post adds, "It does not seem to matter whether the messages on the stickers are about peace and love?or angry and in your face. According to CSU researchers, a Prius with a "My Child is an Honors Student" sticker on the bumper is about as likely to cut you off as an Expedition with a "My Kid Beat Up Your Honors Student" sticker.

Autoblog comments, "Those stickers make cars an extension of their drivers' home turf, which they will defend if they feel you're threatening it in any way. Conversely, people whose autos retain their stock appearance are more likely to show patience behind the wheel."

Let's not even start on how ridiculous bumper stickers are and what kind of person would obviously be drawn to them.

..The study went on to say that people who drive cars with magnetic ribbon bumper stickers are prone to blind patriotism for our troops and the War in Iraq..

Couldn't resist. 😛

I have none of those things and I'll get annoyed with other drivers. It's simply about respect. You going 10mph under the blatantly obvious speed limit (i.e. plenty of signs) when you have no reason to be (i.e. carrying something) is simply being totally uncool to other drivers. No respect = me angry.

And that people with W stickers on their car have a lower IQ than average. 😛

And people with anti-war/Bush stickers are prone to rage because they are wanna be intellectual elitist pricks who blindly think they are better than everyone else.

I have a few stickers on my windows, people piss me off all the time. Cut me off, no turn signals, run red lights constantly, wait till the last second to get over when a lane is endinge, they think the ramp getting on the highway has the rightway- guess what you can eat that guardrail again if you try that.

People need to learn how to drive. I've been riding a bike on teh street for the past 6 yrs, every year I use my finger more and more. Sometimes I wish I drove my truck more, maybe it would knock some sense into some of them.

:laugh:MAO Did I hit a little close to home with that?

I'd like to take this opportunity to note that I don't have any bumper stickers on my car. 😛

So I went to Hawaii and got a "Live Aloha" sticker and "Hang Loose" decal for my truck so that means I fail? 😕

FWIW, I don't need to road rage. I generally never get cut off by the Prius's, Corollas, and Elantras that most people around here tend to drive. Probably because they know I could run right over them and barely feel it. 😀

is the "decal" on your bumper?

The other day I went into the local religious book store, where I saw a "Honk if you love Jesus" bumper sticker. I bought it and put it on the back bumper of my car, and I'm really glad I did. What an uplifting experience followed!

I was stopped at a light at a busy intersection, just lost in thoughts of the Lord, and I didn't notice that the light had changed. That bumper sticker really worked! I found lots of people who loved Jesus. Why, the guy behind me started to honk like crazy. He must really love the Lord because pretty soon, he leaned out his window and yelled "Jesus Christ" as loud as he could. It was like a football game, with his shouting, "Go Jesus Christ Go."

Everyone else started honking, too, so I leaned out my window and waved and smiled to all those loving people. There must have been a guy from Florida back there because I could hear him yelling something about a "sunny beach", and I saw him waving in a funny way with his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my two kids what that meant, they squirmed, looked at each other, giggled and told me that it was the Hawaiian good luck sign, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back.

Several cars behind, a very nice large man stepped out of his car and yelled something. I couldn't hear him very well, but it sounded like "mother trucker" or mother from there. Maybe he was from Florida too. He must really love the Lord.

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and were walking toward me. I bet they wanted to pray, but just then I noticed the light had changed to yellow, and I stepped on the gas. And a good thing I did, because I was the only driver to get across the intersection. I looked back at them standing there. I leaned way out the window, gave them a big smile and held up the Hawaiian good luck sign and I drove away.

Praise the Lord for such wonderful people!

Back window.

That is because they get tailgated by people who try to read the stickers. I don't need a study to know this.

i have no bumper stickers and i am a road raging maniac. i guess i'm an exception.

the study fails to mention any cars with ricer gear such as type-R stickers or chinese words, fart can mufflers, big chrome rims, dark limo tint are asshole drivers.
