I'm on Wellbutrin myself and it seems to work pretty well.

I've been on Paxil for about a year, it helped me turn my life around completely. It doesn't seem like it's been working as well for depression lately, though.

I got two things from the article:

1. Doctors don't even know how medicine works. Scary.
"This is an important new insight into how antidepressants work," Dr. Thomas Insel

2. If we give these mice enough of that stuff, they could become smarter than some of us on ATOT. Scary.

Forget the mice, I want some of that stuff.

Um

Anyone notice this?

"Besides finding drugs that target this process, the other basic research challenge for me is to find out what the function of these new neurons is," Hen said.

What if the function of the new neurons is to make you crave headcheese?

Personally, I am not comfortable with being a guinea pig for the pharmaceutical companies.

<---prefers natural remedies like getting enough sleep, eating right, and exercise for battling depression

LOL!

Glad to hear natural solutions are working for you, too. Oh, they've offered to give me prescriptions but I tend to have what they call 'paradoxal' reactions to drugs. Basically, I will have the opposite reaction to what they give me! After that happened, I decided maybe if I just took better care of myself, I'd start to feel better. Getting enough sleep is much more important than most people realize! So is exercising your stress away... cortisol builds up in our bodies from getting stressed out and then it makes us feel like crap.

Yep. We've just scratched the surface on learning how the brain functions.

we already new this 40 years ago. its called Flowers for Algernon, mice are given drugs that super grow their brains and then... :

Mice who received no X-rays and were killed after being dosed for 11 or 28 days with fluoxetine...

oh boy, this explains the whole Mike Tyson story, Mike "The Algernon" Tyson, took a ton of prozac, was a genius at one point and made $300+ million, but quickly became stupid again and lost it all and more.

Yep. We've just scratched the surface on learning how the brain functions.

The problem is that in most test subjects it DOESN'T, and it takes 'em a while to find a few working models.

Okay, I volunteer to be a test subject. Every day I'll do a case of beer along with a handful of Prozac and we'll see if the beer kills more cells than the Prozac grows. At the end of a couple of months I'll either be a genius or dumber than dirt, but feeling cool about it.

I didn't know this... so do you think Prozac may be as good? I've just lost insurance and may need to find a cheaper alternative eventually. Thanks!

You're asking Anandtecher's what medications are good for you?

The main differences between psychiatric medications in the same classes are basically the side-effects. They all function slightly differently and people can tollerate some better than others.

Seriously, go talk to your doctor.

Yay, there is hope that I will be good at school after all. To damned bad they started my antidepressant after most of the school year was over.

Prozac ---> fluoxetine
Paxil ---> paroxetine
Zoloft ---> sertraline

all three are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. They are not MAOIs as was previously mentioned.

Sorry buddy you have no idea what you're talking about. None of the above mentioned medications are MAOIs. They're SSRIs. TOTALLY different type of drug.
