Hello atot, I may have the opportunity to study abroad in japan this summer. Has anyone else here done this and is it a worthwhile experience? I don't want to waste my money, but if its worth it, I would like to try it out. Duration would be 5 weeks.

i say go for a semester at least

i have not studied abroad, tho my friend did and i did go visit him (japan also)

Are you interested in Japan? Or would you just be going for the hell of it?

I studied in France, and even though it was a very westernized society, I still had quite a bit of culture shock. Ultimately, though, it was a very rewarding experience for me.

Well you don't state the cost but going over to another country for five weeks within the relative safety of studying abroad sounds like a great idea. This assumes also that you are considering it because you studied Japanese/have an interest in Japan.

This!

If you go into this thinking to yourself "oh, I'll be fine.. they probably speak English there," you should quit now. The point of spending all that money and that time there is to get immersed into the culture and the language. Only go if you have an interest in both of those.

Any experience in another country broadens your perspective on the world which is the goal of all universities. However, I've also observed visitors and tourists who spend all their time looking for places and situations that are closest to their own culture. Step out of your comfort zone and be open to seeing the world as the Japanese do.

ノナメオ　<- If you can read that you have a chance. Personally I really wish I had gone. Others that have told me it was pretty amazing. And yes you really need to know at least some 日本語 if you want to make it. Some of the people I know where placed with families that understood nearly zero English.

So if you like the culture and have some of the language it is worth it. If not you won't enjoy it as much. Full immersion like that will however force teach you some basics.

I'm in Japanese I and wasn't really intending to take more(I'm a self study and am doing it to fill in requirements) but I'll end up taking 2 and 3 there are a result.

also, it's going to be 3 grand. Includes airfare, room, food. I haven't gotten a word on whether that includes tuition or not, but it will only add about 500 at the most. It'd be in Kyoto
