Students get message: Leave phones at home.. 1/25/2007

?Last month, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School in Glyndon, Minn., started confiscating ringing phones. School officials keep the phones for 24 hours for a first offense, three days for a second offense and six days ? including a weekend ? for third offenses.

"I've got their attention," says principal Tom Gravel, who took three or four phones daily from his 352 students before the new rules and now confiscates about one a week.

How does this send the message to leave them at home? More like, put them on vibrate.

QFT. I had a phone for emergency purposes, and kept it on vibrate.

Also, I hope that principal isn't terribly fond of his car or house, because they're both going to get "detailed" by irate kids.

Good, they should be banned from schools. You should be in school to learn not to text message your buddies. My generation survived without cell phones. I'm sure this one can.

I expected more of a sexual oriented reply from you, but instead got this serious answer. Very, very disappointed. 😀

All of my professors in college had a rule. If it doesn't interfere with the class I don't care. If I see it you lose a full letter grade off the final grade for the class. If I see it durring a test you get a 0 on that test and a full letter grade taken off the final grade for the class. If for some reason you MUST have a cell phone on durring class talk to me and we can make arrangements. These arrangements MUST be made before your first offense of these rules.

Harsh but fair.

I'm doing performance evaluations later - I need to get my head out of the gutter, and fast. 😀

We couldn't even have cell phones at school, whether they are in use or not. The school officials reason was because they thought we would make drug deals on them. No, I'm not kidding. This was in central Wisconsin, not the hood, by the way.

Idiots, my two-way was much better at moving product. 😛

Hahah. out of hte gutter, huh? Glad to have you back.

when I was in high school (only 5 years ago), if we were caught with a cell phone regardless of ringing, it would be permanently confiscated.

Even that's irritating - during a test or lecture, you just hear NNNGGG-NNNGGG-NNNGGG. And if it's during a test, the person will not turn it off because they don't want to be seen reaching around in their backpack, since it could be construed as using a cellphone for cheating purposes.
Then the person calls again, and the phone vibrates again. Just turn the things OFF people. Your social lives and gossip can wait a goddamn hour while you sit in the lecture for which you're paying a lot of money.

If it's for emergency purposes, fine, you need your phone. Let the professor know before classes start. If it vibrates during a test or lecture, you'll see who it is, and if you have to leave, quick make sure the professor knows why you're leaving, and be on your way.
And no, keeping your cellphone on so your friend can call you and tell you about the cute guy/girl that just walked by is NOT an emergency.

Seems like it's just a warning to keep phones off during school hours, which is a perfectly reasonable. But i think having a phone around for after school shouldn't be a problem.

So what? Use the payphones and actually pay attention in class.

.. end the hiphop cellphone fashion ongoing in the public schools.

haha yeha. when i was in high school pagers, phones and such were banned. they thought only drug dealers needed them so if you had one you were a drug dealer.

But if in class turn that ****** off. Only time i had mine on was when my wife was due to have a baby. but then i talked to the professor.

dumb logic.

My great grandparents lived without airplanes or microwaves, yet each one of these inventions makes life easier.

Same with a cell phone.

Please explain how a cell phone is used to make Shakespeare easier. There is no direct link between cell phones and school.

After you're done with that explain how having and airplane and a microwave in class everday helps the learning process at all.

IMO they would both be a distraction and so are cell phones.

that rule has been instated here as well except here they clearly said that they expect teachers to do the same. but some teachers do bring their phone and leave it out and it rings. nothing happens to them though.

I know where that is lol. I don't think they can legally do that though. It is disrespectful though.

Why not? My mom is a teacher and has a drawer full of cool stuff she confiscates from kids. If they remember to ask she will give it back at the end of the year. You are at school to learn, nothing else.
