Hope Grant is great. If your at least half time and in the first 2 years of college (or tech school) you can get up to $1500 back. This is a return not a deduction. Go to the link and see if you qualify. I worked part time while going to school last year and I got every cent I payed during the year back, over $1200.

Even if you already have your taxes done if you qualify you can file an admenment and get the full refund. If you are still filed as a dependant of your parents then you parents can get the return. Please check this out, it is worth the few minutes to read it over.

I can answer basic questions about the grant, just ask or PM me.

-- If this works out for you, you can buy me a hot dog at the next Annual AnandTech Forum Picnic.

Matt <-- can eat tuns of hot dogs.

its a good deal, unfortunately your parents adjusted gross income must be less than $100K joint (or $50K single)... hope someone can take advantage of this.

and like he said, its not a deduction (worth around $500), its a tax credit (worth $1500)

Right if you are a dependant then the max is $100,000 join income. But if you are independant it is based on your income. I put myself through school and I benifited from the Hope Grant.

If you aren't in the first year of school, you can still use the lifetime learning credit. I made around $16000 this year (remember to declare your scholarships kiddies) and got $650 back.

My wife and I make over $100K combined, and I still was able to use the Lifetime Learning Credit. Got my entire tuition payout back, just over $800 (community college, three classes).

Don't forget to credit President Clinton for this.

While everyone was focusing on what he did with his cigar, he was actually doing something that benefitted the average joe.

Do you think George Bush will set up his office in Harlem when his term is over?

hanybanoub here is the link to Lifetime Learning Credit hope it helps

TatSteeL if they say you owe them but you qualify for Hope then it can credit what you owe. In other words if you qualify Hope will pay the taxes you owe. You just have to fill out the right forms

Zwingle Bush can set up his office in Hell

Boy that came out of left field. In his short time in office what could he have done to irriate you so? This thread needs to be moved over to OT if it continues on about politics.

Tatsteel - You get back 20% of what you pay in tuition, books, and student loans. Regardless of your year in school.

Go and talk to H&R Block about it. They'll help you out.

cheapster, how about Bush nominating John Ashcroft for Attorney General? That sure was irritating to me and pretty damn irritating to many many people. It's amazing how someone who is racist, pro-tobacco, pro-life, anti-disegregation, and prone to lying become the highest law enforcement officer of the United States.

jaggrey, I know about 10 people (plus myself) that did it. People that I went to school with or am friends with. Most of us went to a profesional tax person to have the forms filled out. I had already telefiled my taxes and was expecting about 200 back. Friend told me about it so I filed an amenmant and I am now getting about every cent that was taken out of my paychecks last year. (over 1200 which will do nicely for a new computer :D )

Any tax experts can help me out here?

Alright, last year my parents claimed me as a dependent, so I didn't bother to file taxes. Although I received about 16k in need based scholarships, cal grants, pell grants.

This year, my parents are NOT going to claim me. So should I file my own taxes, report the scholarship/grant money, and then apply for the Hope and Lifetime refunds? Btw, I don't work, so I don't have a W-2 or anything. Also, this is my 2nd year of college.

I don't want the IRS coming down on me for not reporting, then again, If I do report, I don't want to have to pay back anything.

Any advice/help? thanks!

Do you actually get the $1500 from the Hope Grant or is that deducted from how much you have to pay. I will be getting about $1000 back from my taxes this year. Will it be $2500 if I apply for the Hope Grant or will it be still only $1000 because I don't owe the government anything on this tax return?

I also must note that I am a sophomore right now, so does that mean that I can get a Hope Grant for this years tax returns?

Okay, I'm a little confused. So where do we fill out these forms? Do they go with the tax forms our parents will be turning in in a couple months?

Thanks Barrak. I'm going back to school again soon. I had heard about this before. Now your post really made me realize just how much it is worth.

Good thread.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. Bush should be forced to nominate people who hate him and every belief he holds. Only leftist pigs allowed. Regarding his beliefs:

1. Racist? On what grounds do you base this? Merely that he is a republican, and in your warped world-view, all republicans are racist? That he opposed one black nominee for a federal judgeship? Did you know he supported approximately 95% of the other black nominees? How many white republicans has Maxine Waters, or any other black democrat, supported for a judgeship?

2. Pro-tobacco and pro-life. Wow. Call Hitler: he's going to have to give up his seat in hell to Ashcroft whenever he croaks.

3. Anti-Desegregation. Good Lord. Are you serious? He's not a Klansman. Ask him if he's for or against Brown vs. Board of Education.

4. Prone to lying. Well, I guess he saw how well it worked for Bill Clinton.

I know good men and women who have met Ashcroft and worked with him. They say he is a man of integrity and honor, and I'll take their word over your prejudiced generalizations.
