In case you some how missed the release of DreamSpark, hook in and get your free software. If your school is not listed, speak with your department head or use one of the provided work arounds. I used one of the work arounds and it worked out well.

Current Software Available:
VS2005/2008 Pro
Xna Creators Club
Windows Server 2003
Expression Suite

If you are not a student or faculty and somehow also missed Microsoft's release of Express, Visual Studio Express versions are free to download and use and contain a large portion of the Standard+ SKUs.

What workarounds? I didn't see any listed.

How does MSDNAA work exactly? At my college, students are not allowed to access the site without the professor's consent, i.e. you cannot just ask for a user id and password
unless the professor says so. I argued this matter with the professor to no avail.

they had a thing where you would show your student ID to one of the
ed. software companies, i think journeyed.com, and they would help
you get to the promised land (of downloading free legal decent software).

This is how it works at Tech: We get automatic access at the beginning of every semester from each school participating in MSDNAA. So if I'm taking an ECE and a CS class this semester, both the ECE dept. and College of Computing will give me access to their respective MSDNAA packages. This access is revoked at the end of each semester.

Server 2003 is a very nice OS. I used it for a few months before my Vista arrived. It's too bad there weren't enough mainstream software support for it especially in gaming and multimedia.
