Students create 3D scanning app

I just noticed Pico Laser Projectors available (in form factors the size of a phone).

How much engineering would it take to make such a device also useful as a laser 3D scanner?

It would be really nice if some of this hardware could be used for additional productivity/work purposes? (especially if the user interface was simple and intuitive enough that non-tech savvy folks could use it).
