A student from Novi died today at Ferris State University in Big Rapids after he was struck by a vehicle as he crossed State Street, a roadway that cuts through campus.

Fumitoshi Yonemura, 18, was a freshman studying biotechnology, said university spokeswoman Leah Nixon.

Yonemura was crossing State at Ferris Drive just before 8 a.m. when he was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by Richard Weisenberger, 19, of New Hudson, according to the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety.

According to a release from the public safety department, the light was green for northbound State traffic.

Ours kept getting hit by buses. I hit a few people with my bike. People would look both ways to cross the street but not the bike path that was part of the street too.

Honestly I'm sick of cyclists on the paths at my university. I wouldn't be at all upset if every single one of them was hit by a train tomorrow. I'm sure pedestrians feel the same way about me on my skateboard, so fuck them too.

It's terrifying to drive around town at Penn State. The students and students on bikes just dart out into the street at random places without looking, even at night. I almost hit one of them who crossed out of a cross-walk and they actually had the gall to turn and get upset with me as I drove by.

people don't realize sun glare may affect people's vision. Always let the bigger vehicle go first unless they purposely stop for you.

at UT they weren't really a hazard when I lived on campus. I think it was because they closed the main road ( forgot what it was called ) from Jester dorms all the way to RLM hall ( seemed like 3/4-1 mile ) and a few other roads too. I can't remember ever being close to getting hit.

My old campus people had the right of way at crosswalks and people on bikes only had the right of way if they got off the bike and walked across. If they were still on the bike they had to stop to those walking and/or did not have the right of way for others.

Pretty much every cyclist I observe around here is an asshat who believes that he or she has all the rights of both vehicles and pedestrians. I'm sure there are responsible cyclists somewhere, but they seem to be few and far between.

I could NEVER drive on a consistent basis here at Penn State. People literally cross whenever they feel like it no matter what the situation.. I'd definitely hit someone. The bike people are also really rude too (riding on crowded sidewalks, blowing stop signs, etc) and I get pleasure when I see them collide (just a couple weeks ago I saw a sick crash by Pugh.. bent rims and all)

One time, a biker ran over a squirrel that was crossing and it got caught in the spokes and then got really injured it. He stopped for a second, looked back and then continued pedaling. Me and my friend were walking by and we were just too heartbroken to not do anything... it was like limping/crawling down the side of the road... we saw a campus police person who then called animal control and we then left.. I hope they put it out of its misery. The bike person was a total tool

Well technically they could. Depends on where they are riding at the time. Sounds like you have issues with that fact.

A pedestrian always has the right of way...anyone on a vehicle must yield.

It hasn't changed since I was there then. When I was a student I refused to drive on campus, too scary. Now if I have to drive there for some conference I avoid college ave and try to stay on the North side of campus.

It's sad that the driver of the car has to live with this on his conscious, even though he did nothing wrong.

I've hit TWO cyclists here on campus. Both at night. They wear nothing reflective and cycle crazy fast on the sidewalks, darting all over the place. I never even saw anything coming, just BAM - they run into my car. Thankfully neither was seriously injured. I only drive ~25mph on campus.

Well I think the answer is obvious, you need to start driving faster.

The only way for these bitches to learn there lesson is to be put in a hospital after being struck.

You didn't stand at the foot of the 24th street hill @ speedway for long enough then. I've seen several pedestrians taken out by bikes in that intersection.

You're right, but it is pretty reckless IMO of bikers to come out of nowhere and fly through a crosswalk without even looking for oncoming traffic. I drive defensively, so even when I have the right of way, I'm checking to make sure some idiot isn't going to run a light and hit me or something like that. Bikers should do the same, but for whatever reason it seems like many of them don't. The fact that they had the right of way probably isn't going to be of much consolation to a biker who's disabled for life because of an auto accident.

Just asking cyclists out there to practice a little caution. I try to be careful and watch out for them, but people make mistakes.

unless there is a sign or something basically stating otherwise.

On a road, and there is no crosswalk, the pedestrian does not have the right of way. If there is a crosswalk with a sign saying do not cross, the pedestrian does not have the right of way.
The vehicles do.
And it's also common sense that you let the big ass metallic machines drive by and wait for a clearing, just in case they aren't paying as much attention as you think they are.

speedway.

they closed it to all vehicle traffic, including bikes. the only things allowed were the fire trucks on their weekly excursion to welch (a big chemistry building)
