Just a few words:

"One of Parkland, Fla.'s most prominent student activists on stopping gun violence has called for a boycott of Vanguard and BlackRock, two of the world's biggest investors in gunmakers.

In a post on Twitter on Tuesday, David Hogg remarked on the firms' ownership of gun maker stocks, adding "if you use them, feel free to let them know." Then he added two tags: BoycottVanguard BoycottBlackrock."

This kid is getting annoying. He may have an important message but in my opinion he is going about it the wrong way and will ultimately fail.

Now he is trying to tell me where to invest. I think I am going to drop some more funds into my Vanguard account ...

Hmm, I’m pretty sure I’m invested in funds or ETFs with both firms, but as long as those funds don’t have any gunmaker holdings I’m good. I’m all for activist divestments, but wholesale boycotts of investment funds—no thanks.

Kid is smart though—he knows that getting 10,000 people to sell gunmaker stocks wouldn't have the impact of getting just one institutional investor to dump their holdings.

Has TIAA-CREF fully divested of guns/ammo manufacturing, wholesale and retail yet?? Makes sense to start there.

a total market fund/ETF like VTI or VTSAX does hold the market weight of gun companies. doesn't matter what the company does, if it's part of the market it's in the fund.

they probably don't amount to much more than a fraction of a percent though.

Keep your pants on Hannity. This kid can't tell you anything. He can only suggest.

Not a good move imo.

How are regular folks/kids going to boycott blackrock? Is he asking me to move my 401 investments around? Um, no.

This is not really actionable.

This is not Wayfair or Starbucks. He only has credibility of people think boycotts will actually have power behind them and can directly effect brand or sales.

This one is not winnable and just weakens his position. Better to keep prefer dry for a real fight.

If index fund manages did as this kid asked they’d be breaking the terms of the fund charter/prospectus and may be subject to lawsuit or adverse action by the SEC. And no active fund manager is going to change their investment mix just to satisfy a teenager who doesn’t even invest in the fund.

exactly. plus VG and just about every other big provider already offers socially responsible funds for those so inclined to tailor their investments according to their preferences.

i don't care though, i just want to own everything.

Good job David Hogg. Put your mouth where their money is.

Gun peddlers should be treated like drug dealers. They are far worse human beings and they do far more damage.

Poor little Bubbsy.

You're definitely the victim in all this.

Yeah, I agree with this. Especially since probably most of their gun company ownership is in index funds, nothing would change if I just moved my money into a different index fund company. Calling for dumb boycotts will just weaken him.

"FBI data shows there were about 11,000 gun-related homicides in 2016."

"More than 64,000 drug overdose deaths estimated in 2016 (by CDC)."
I'd think suicides and accidental gun deaths would be the more directly comparable statistic to ODing. Still would be a lot less though.

I'd say a teen who witnessed indescribable tragedy and decided to do something about it in a very public way is far, far more of a hero than you will ever be.
I don't think you understand what "hero" means. If this lad charged the shooter to defend the other students, he's a hero. Asking people not to invest in a gun related fund makes him an activist.

True, he's not a hero in the literal sense. But he's still more of a hero than Outhouse, that much is for sure. Hogg is willing to stand up for something he believes in, even if it means facing tremendous forces of corruption like the NRA; I doubt Outhouse would stand up if Starbucks botched his coffee order.
